IAN/COLIN LAWRENCE FROM HALESOWEN AND SALTLEY SENTENCED FOR DECADES-OLD CHILD RAPE CASE

In a case that has spanned over two decades, two brothers, Ian Lawrence and Colin Lawrence, have been convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous child sexual offenses that date back to the late 1970s. The convictions were announced after a lengthy trial at Birmingham Crown Court, where the jury heard disturbing accounts of abuse involving three young girls over a period of several years.

Ian Lawrence, aged 40, residing on Herrick Road in Alum Rock, Saltley, and Colin Lawrence, aged 42, from Beaumont Road in Halesowen, faced a total of 13 charges that included rape and indecent assault. Both men had initially denied all allegations, maintaining their innocence throughout the proceedings. However, the court found sufficient evidence to convict them on all counts.

The case revealed that the abuse was carried out at various addresses, with the victims recounting how each brother had committed separate assaults. One of the victims, who chose to remain anonymous for legal reasons, described her realization of the severity of the abuse only after she was baptized. She explained, “I was taught the law of chastity and how we should save our bodies for married life. That was when I knew it was wrong.” Her testimony shed light on the emotional and psychological impact of the abuse, which she endured over a four-year period.

Another woman also testified, describing her systematic abuse at the hands of the Lawrence brothers. The prosecution, led by Rachel Brand QC, emphasized that these attacks had persisted for many years before authorities intervened. The case highlighted the long-lasting trauma inflicted on the victims and the difficulty in bringing such cases to light after so many years.

During the trial, defense lawyers challenged the credibility of the victims’ accounts. Jane McCur QC, representing Colin Lawrence, suggested that the first woman’s allegations might be the result of a vivid imagination, stating, “Your memory is playing tricks on you and I suggest that you are moving your steps all the time to suit your case.” Similarly, Frances Oldham, defending Ian Lawrence, argued that her client had never committed any sexual offenses, asserting, “You have made this up about Ian Lawrence and I suggest that he has never sexually abused you at all.”

Despite these defenses, the court found the evidence compelling enough to impose significant sentences. Ian Lawrence was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while Colin Lawrence received a 10-year term. The sentences reflect the gravity of their crimes and the enduring impact on the victims. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of justice for victims of child abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred.
