WOOLWICH PORTER IAN WILLIAMS ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ONLINE GROOMING STING IN LONDON

In a case that has drawn significant attention to the dangers of online grooming, Ian Williams, a 48-year-old hospital porter from Woolwich, narrowly avoided imprisonment after being caught attempting to engage in inappropriate and illegal conversations with a supposed underage girl. The incident unfolded in July 2016, when Williams was lured into a sting operation conducted by a group known as Public Justice PHL, also referred to as Paedophile Hunters London, which specializes in exposing individuals seeking to exploit minors online.

Williams had initiated contact with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl named Eva Wells through Facebook, where the group had set up a fake profile to trap predators. The conversation began with Williams sending a simple greeting, “Hi Eva,” and despite the girl immediately revealing her age, he continued to pursue the interaction. Throughout their exchange, Williams persistently asked her to send topless photos, even resorting to emotional manipulation by using a crying emoji to persuade her. He also inquired if she liked “naughty boys” and, alarmingly, sent a graphic photo of his genitals early in the conversation.

During the exchange, Williams repeatedly urged the girl to be “brave” and assured her that their secret would be safe if she complied. His messages included comments like “it will be ur secret” and requests for explicit images, despite her clear indication of her age and the obvious inappropriateness of his requests. The conversation transcript reveals that Williams was actively trying to incite sexual activity with a minor, which is a serious criminal offense.

Members of the Public Justice PHL group handed their evidence, including the full transcript of the chat, over to the police. Following this, Williams was arrested and brought before Bexley Magistrates Court. During the proceedings, he admitted to attempting to cause or incite a girl aged between 14 and 15 to engage in sexual activity, a charge that underscores the gravity of his actions.

In court, Williams was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, but this sentence was suspended for 24 months, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offense within that period. Additionally, he was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which imposes restrictions on his behavior to prevent future offenses. He is also required to participate in a community sexual offending group program for 100 days and complete a rehabilitation activity for 60 days. Furthermore, Williams was ordered to pay costs amounting to £85 and a victim surcharge of £115.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of groups like Public Justice PHL, which was established in September of the previous year. The group claims to have successfully identified and helped convict around 20 paedophiles, with 14 already convicted and five currently serving sentences. Their Facebook page states that they “pose as children online” and pass on any interactions they believe to involve predators to law enforcement, emphasizing that they do not initiate contact themselves.

One of the group's organizers, known as JB, explained their motivation: “We set it up because we were constantly coming across men who wanted to groom children online and I couldn’t sit back and ignore it. I thought I would go undercover and do the work and so I’ve spent lots of man hours doing what I’m doing to bring them to justice.” JB stressed the importance of protecting children’s innocence and warned that individuals like Williams pose a continuous threat. “What that man did he needs to be exposed for what he did because, at the end of the day, when he gets released who doesn’t say that he can’t do it again? There is no guarantee there. Hopefully he’s learnt his lesson and he won’t ever do that sort of thing again. But once a paedophile always a paedophile – you’re always going to have a sexual interest in children.”
