IAN MANSELL FROM FELTHAM AVOIDS PRISON AFTER SEXUAL ABUSE OF BOY AT ISLEWORTH CROWN COURT

In August 2004, a deeply disturbing case unfolded at Isleworth Crown Court involving Ian Mansell, a 70-year-old man from Feltham, who was accused of sexually abusing a young boy. Mansell, who was visibly frail and suffering from terminal cancer, appeared before the court to face charges related to his heinous actions. Despite the severity of the allegations, Mansell was spared imprisonment due to his critical health condition.

According to court records, Mansell pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a seven-year-old boy in November of the previous year. The court was informed that Mansell had developed a seemingly friendly relationship with the young boys living in his neighborhood. Prosecutor John Hulme detailed that Mansell would often visit the boys, engaging in seemingly innocent interactions. However, during one such visit, Mansell sat the young boy on his knee and handed him a mobile phone to play games. It was during this visit that Mansell inappropriately put his hand down the boy’s trousers, an act that constituted the indecent assault.

In addition to this charge, Mansell faced two other counts of indecent assault involving different young boys, as well as a charge of gross indecency with one of the victims. It was revealed that Mansell had a troubling history, with previous convictions for similar offenses dating back to 1983 and 1997. The court was presented with medical reports indicating that Mansell was suffering from leukaemia, which contributed to his frail condition.

During the hearing, Mansell’s legal representative, Chris Amor, acknowledged that the offense warranted a prison sentence. However, given Mansell’s terminal illness, Amor requested that the sentence be suspended. The judge, Hezlett Colgan, took into account Mansell’s health and the evidence of his genuine remorse. As a result, the court suspended a nine-month prison sentence for a period of two years. Additionally, Mansell was ordered to register as a sex offender for five years, a requirement that will be monitored by authorities.

A family member of one of the victims, who cannot be named due to legal restrictions, expressed their outrage at what they perceived as leniency. The sister of one of the boys told the Times that the family was devastated by the court’s decision. She stated, “Nine months is nothing compared to what we have been through. This man has done it before and gotten away with it. No-one knows how long it’s been going on.” She further explained that Mansell, who had previously done odd jobs in the neighborhood, was seen as an ordinary man, and the family had no suspicion of his true nature at the time. The sister added, “He was an old man doing odd bits of work that used to come around for coffee – we didn’t think anything about it at the time. It’s disgusting to think that he’s done this before and still hasn’t gone to prison. He has ruined my brother’s life and that of a close friend of mine.”

In court, Mansell was identified by his first name as Ian, although he had previously told the family his name was Peter. The case has left a lasting impact on the community and highlights the ongoing issues surrounding child abuse and the justice system’s handling of offenders with terminal illnesses.
