NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR DOMESTIC HOMICIDE
A HUSBAND who strangled his wife with a dressing gown cord then went to a pub to drink and take cocaine has been jailed for life.Ian Hamer was convicted of murdering his wife of 27 years, Joanne at their home in North Lincolnshire, in May last year.He admitted manslaughter but denied murder, stating that his mental state at the time was such that he did not comprehend his actions.
After a three-week trial at Hull Crown Court, Hamer was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years.
The court heard that Hamer's marriage had become tumultuous due to his controlling and abusive behavior, including physical aggression, jealousy, and manipulation.
It was noted that he monitored Joanne's social media, accused her of infidelity, and was physically aggressive towards her and their children on several occasions.
Police had been called to the home multiple times.
Hamer also struggled with alcohol and had an affair, which destabilized their relationship further.
Joanne, who was considering separating and moving out, wanted to give their relationship one last chance, but Hamer had been communicating with another woman just two days prior to her death.
Following the murder, Hamer went to a pub, played pool, and was seen laughing and joking with friends while taking cocaine.
Detective Chief Inspector Christine Calvert commented on the case, emphasizing Joanne's suffering and Hamer's lack of remorse.
The case may lead to a Domestic Homicide Review to further investigate the circumstances of the murder.
