BRIDLINGTON AND DRIFFIELD ART TEACHER IAN BLOTT SENTENCED FOR PUPIL ABUSE IN EAST YORKSHIRE

In August 2006, a tragic case unfolded in East Yorkshire involving a senior art teacher from Bridlington and Driffield who was convicted of engaging in a long-term sexual relationship with a teenage pupil. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the misconduct of 54-year-old Ian Blott, whose actions have left a lasting scar on the victim's life.

During the hearing at Hull Crown Court, it was disclosed that Blott, a teacher with over three decades of experience, began his inappropriate relationship with the girl when she was just 15 years old. The relationship reportedly lasted approximately two and a half years, during which Blott engaged in multiple sexual acts with the minor. The prosecution, led by Helen Hendry, detailed how the teacher had sex with the girl on numerous occasions, including in unconventional locations such as a classroom cupboard, his car, the steam room of his gym, and during school trips. These acts were not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of grooming and abuse.

Evidence presented in court included text messages exchanged between Blott and the girl, some of which contained explicit language and propositions. For instance, messages like “Can we have sex please?XX” and “Last lesson. Room 60. Fancy it?XX” were cited as examples of the inappropriate communication. Additionally, Blott had sent her explicit photographs and indecent video clips, further demonstrating the breach of trust and the exploitation of his position as an educator.

Blott pleaded guilty to two charges of abusing a position of trust and two counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust. His legal representative, Jason Pitter, emphasized that the defendant denied having sex with the girl on school premises, asserting that the acts occurred no more than ten times and that the relationship lasted no longer than a year. However, the court was informed that there were discrepancies between Blott’s account and the victim’s testimony, who is now 18 years old.

Judge John Dowse addressed the court, stating that the differences in accounts would not influence the severity of the sentence. He expressed skepticism about Blott’s claims that no sexual activity took place within the school, indicating that the evidence suggested otherwise. The judge remarked, “No words of mine can restore to her the innocence which she had and you took. She suffered from bulimia nervosa – it was because of you. You must know that you’ve destroyed at least part of this girl’s life.”

Further, the judge indicated that Blott had groomed the girl from a young age, having first taught her when she was only 13. Reports indicated that Blott was still in denial about his actions, with one suggesting he believed the girl “cajoled and seduced” him into the relationship. Despite the gravity of the case, the court acknowledged the girl’s resilience, noting her progress in overcoming her psychiatric issues. She had recently passed two A-levels, including an A in art, and was preparing to study fine art at higher education.

In sentencing, Judge Dowse imposed a four-year prison term on Blott and issued an order prohibiting him from any contact with girls under 16. He also commented that the maximum sentence of five years might not be sufficient for such serious offenses. The court also highlighted an ongoing investigation into how the school where Blott worked handled the situation, suggesting possible lapses in safeguarding.

Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Nigel Sawyer praised the bravery of the victim, describing her ordeal as “every parent’s worst nightmare.” He commended her courage in speaking out and emphasized the betrayal of trust by Blott, who was supposed to support and nurture his students but instead exploited his role to prey on a vulnerable young girl. The case has cast a shadow over the local educational community in Bridlington and Driffield, prompting calls for stricter safeguarding measures and greater vigilance to protect children from similar abuse.
