PROMINENT CERN SCIENTIST IAN BIRD CONVICTED OF CHILD EXPLOITATION ATTEMPTS
Ian Bird, a former physicist and senior scientist at CERN, has been convicted of attempting to conspire to meet a woman who was posing as a child online, with the intent to sexually abuse her children.Despite being linked to efforts to meet the undercover police officer, Bird was sentenced to two years of supervision and 150 hours of unpaid work, after pleading guilty to serious charges of child exploitation.
The case revealed that Bird, 70, believed he was communicating with the children’s mother in a sordid online plot, but in fact he was speaking with an undercover officer.
The sheriff described him as "a disgusting and vile deviant" and stated that it was "in the long-term public interest to explore your deviant behaviour through supervision so you never do it again." Bird had served at CERN until 2020, but had stepped down prior to the offenses.
The investigation included seizing electronic devices containing evidence of his malicious conversations.
His family expressed shock, anger, and upset but stood by him.
The court considered his otherwise law-abiding life and successful career, including his work on the Large Hadron Collider.
The judge emphasized that Bird sought out the online 'complainer' named 'LovingMum' and discussed his disturbing intentions, which caused serious concern about his conduct.
The case highlighted the dangers of online predation and the importance of law enforcement's covert operations against pedophiles.
