IAIN OTTWAY FROM TORQUAY ADMITS TO DECADES-OLD SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRLS IN PLYMOUTH
In a case that has resurfaced troubling memories from over thirty years ago, Iain Ottway, a man currently aged 40 and residing on Cleveland Road in Torquay, has confessed to multiple instances of sexual misconduct involving two young girls.The allegations date back to the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Ottway was approximately 14 years old, and the victims were between nine and eleven years old.
During a court hearing at Plymouth Crown Court, Ottway, dressed in a smart suit, pleaded guilty to a total of ten charges related to his abusive actions.
These charges spanned from 1987 to 1990 and included one count of gross indecency with a child, along with six additional counts of indecent assault against the same girl when she was under the age of 13.
Furthermore, he admitted to three counts of indecently assaulting a second girl, also under 13 at the time of the offenses.
Prosecutor Mary McCarthy from the Crown Prosecution Service explained that the charges presented in court were only a sample of the numerous incidents of indecency committed by Ottway.
She indicated that the offences he admitted to likely represent a fraction of a much larger pattern of abuse over the course of more than two years.
It was noted during the proceedings that Ottway has no previous criminal record apart from some old convictions related to shoplifting, which are unrelated to the current allegations.
The court heard that the offences were serious and had caused significant harm to the victims.
Judge Ian Lawrie decided to adjourn the sentencing until May 5 to allow for a probation report to be prepared.
Ottway was granted bail under strict conditions, including a directive not to contact his victims and an obligation to cooperate fully with probation officers.
The judge issued a stern warning, stating, “Please do not take the view that because I am releasing you on bail that the likely sentence will be less than custody.
All options are open.” As the case continues, the community in Torquay and Plymouth remains attentive to the proceedings, emphasizing the importance of justice and safeguarding vulnerable children from such heinous acts.
