TORQUAY MAN JAILED FOR CHOKING GIRLFRIEND
A woman narrowly avoided losing her life when her enraged boyfriend assaulted her with a choke hold, a court was informed.Kareem Andes, a resident of Torquay, lost his temper following a night out with his partner, erupting in anger and threatening to kill her.
He then grabbed her from behind and constricted her neck.
She began to faint as he released his grip, causing her to collapse onto the floor.
Andes, aged 32, pleaded guilty to intentionally strangling her and received a prison sentence of 22 months at Exeter Crown Court.
The assault took place on January 20, after a dispute arose once they returned home.
The court heard that Andes’s fury escalated when the woman locked herself inside, and he threatened to kill her if she refused to open the door.
He then restrained her with a choke hold for approximately seven seconds, during which she felt herself losing consciousness and becoming limp, ultimately falling and injuring her knee.
The woman succeeded in fleeing, and Andes was arrested by police that same night.
He initially denied the assault but later expressed remorse, acknowledging shame for his behavior.
Judge Edward Burgess stressed that there were no justifications for his actions, sentencing Andes to two years in jail and imposing a five-year restraining order.
He now feels profound shame over what he did.
