IAIN LAWRENCE SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR MURDER IN OADBY
In a case that has shocked the community of Oadby, Iain Lawrence, a man with a background as a former pilot, has been handed a life sentence after being convicted of the murder of his estranged wife, Sally Lawrence.The tragic incident unfolded on Gartree Road in Leicester, where Lawrence deliberately crashed his Peugeot 406 into a tree following a heated argument with Sally over their ongoing divorce proceedings.
According to court reports, Sally, aged 47, was killed almost instantly in the collision.
The failure of her passenger airbag to deploy was a critical factor in her death, while Lawrence’s own vehicle had a different safety feature disabled—his airbag had been turned off.
The judge, Justice Leggatt, described Lawrence’s actions as “vile” and emphasized that he would serve a minimum of 24 years behind bars before being eligible for parole.
During the trial, Lawrence attempted to justify his reckless behavior by claiming that he was incapacitated due to a leg spasm, which he described as causing excruciating pain and preventing him from applying the brakes.
However, evidence presented in court painted a different picture.
It was shown that Lawrence adopted the brace position during the crash and was uninjured, casting doubt on his account of being physically unable to control the vehicle.
Sally had confided in friends prior to her death, revealing her fears about her husband.
She reportedly told them she was scared of him and that she believed he had “evil in his eyes,” highlighting the domestic tension that preceded the tragedy.
Witnesses at the scene, including a retired firefighter, testified that Lawrence appeared to be feigning unconsciousness, further suggesting that he was not genuinely injured or incapacitated during the incident.
Investigations also revealed that Sally’s car was found unlocked with her handbag inside, which many interpret as an attempt by Sally to escape her husband’s wrath.
Her sister, Catherine Kudhail, expressed her profound grief, describing Sally as a “caring, kind young woman with a huge heart,” and lamenting the loss of her life.
