EAST LONDON PARENTS ON TRIAL FOR BABY'S FATAL SHAKING
A three-month-old infant named Kaylani Kalanzi tragically lost her life during her parents' tumultuous relationship, despite being under the supervision of social services.On 8 July 2024, she was rushed to hospital after suffering serious injuries, which included being violently shaken—leading to severe brain damage—as well as fractures to her leg and ribs.
She passed away after fifteen days.
Her parents, Herbert Kalanzi, aged 35, and Nazli Merthoca, aged 24, both residents of East Ham in London, are currently standing trial at the Old Bailey, denying allegations of murder and causing or allowing her death.
The prosecution, led by Zoe Johnson KC, described their relationship as 'mutually abusive' and noted that Ms.
Merthoca consumed drugs.
Court proceedings revealed that their relationship deteriorated out of control and that their young daughter was caught amidst the chaos, with both parents aware of the dangers she faced.
In the weeks prior to her death, Kaylani had an eye injury, which Ms.
Merthoca initially claimed was due to Mr.
Kalanzi, but later altered her story when questioned by medical professionals.
The prosecution emphasized their failure to safeguard her and stated that 'on 8 July 2024, the constant threat to Kaylani's safety turned into a fatal reality.' The case remains ongoing, with the court examining the question of who was responsible for her injuries, as both parents deny harming her, leaving the issue of culpability unresolved.
