HENRY SCOTT FROM BAGPATH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN COTSWOLDS
In a case that has shocked the local community, Henry Scott, a 24-year-old man from Bagpath near Tetbury, was sentenced to a significant prison term after admitting to a series of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. The crimes took place over a span of several months, specifically between February and May of 2018, and involved multiple instances of penetrative sex, as well as inappropriate communications and possession of indecent images related to the victim.Scott appeared before Gloucester Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor, along with charges of sexual communication with a child and possession of indecent images. The court was informed that Scott's actions had a profound and lasting impact on the victim, a girl who is now 17 years old. During her victim impact statement, she described the emotional and psychological toll the abuse has taken on her life. She recounted suffering from panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, and struggles with concentration, particularly affecting her GCSE studies. The girl expressed that she felt as if a 'bomb had gone off' in her life, highlighting the devastating effect of Scott’s actions.
When arrested, Scott initially denied any sexual contact with the girl, but evidence and his guilty plea confirmed his involvement. The court heard that the abuse occurred over a four-month period, during which Scott engaged in multiple acts of sexual misconduct. The victim’s statement also revealed the ripple effect of the trauma on her family, emphasizing the widespread emotional damage caused by Scott’s crimes. She shared her hope that her experience would serve as a warning to others, and expressed her desire to prevent similar incidents from happening to other children.
Defence counsel Katherine Blackwell acknowledged Scott’s age and mental health issues, stating that he had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, which affects social interaction and communication, as well as pathological demand disorder, which impairs understanding of boundaries. Blackwell argued that Scott’s condition contributed to his behavior and lack of awareness of the severity of his actions, noting that he had previously been cautioned in April 2016 for meeting with a 13-year-old girl on multiple occasions and warned not to do so.
Judge Ian Lawrie QC addressed Scott directly during sentencing, emphasizing the seriousness of the offences. He pointed out that Scott was in his early twenties when the crimes occurred and that the offences were committed repeatedly while the victim was between 13 and 14 years old. The judge expressed concern over the fact that Scott had been cautioned for similar conduct just seven months prior to the offences, which indicated a pattern of behavior. Despite acknowledging Scott’s medical diagnoses and borderline cognitive function, the judge made it clear that such factors did not diminish the gravity of his crimes.
As a result, Scott was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. Additionally, he was placed under a sexual harm prevention order for seven years and required to register as a sex offender for the same period. The court’s decision reflects the serious nature of the offences and the need to protect the community from potential future harm, while also considering Scott’s mental health conditions in the context of his sentencing.
