HAZEL TEMPLETON FROM COMBER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN BELFAST CROWN COURT
Hazel Templeton, a woman aged 79 from the town of Comber, faced justice in Belfast Crown Court after being convicted of serious sexual offenses committed against a young boy. The crimes took place during the summer of 1984, when the victim was only 12 years old. Templeton pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including four counts of indecent assault and three counts of inciting gross indecency with a child, highlighting her acknowledgment of the severity of her actions.During the sentencing hearing, it was disclosed that Templeton attempted to justify her misconduct by engaging in victim-blaming tactics. She told a Probation Officer that the young boy was 'physically mature for his age,' implying that her actions were somehow justified or less harmful. She also expressed a disturbing hope that the boy would interpret the sexual encounters as a 'rite of passage,' a phrase that underscores her attempt to rationalize or diminish the gravity of her offenses.
Judge Mark Reel, presiding over the case, made it clear that the defendant's actions were driven by sexual gratification and that she exploited the innocence of a child for her own pleasure. His remarks underscored the seriousness of her crimes and the breach of trust involved.
Following her conviction and sentencing, the victim, who had carried the burden of these traumatic experiences for over four decades, spoke out publicly. He expressed relief at finally being able to share his story, stating, 'She stole my childhood; she is charged with abuse offences but I see it as theft.' His words serve as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact such abuse can have on victims. He also took the opportunity to encourage others who may have suffered similar abuse to come forward and seek justice, emphasizing the importance of breaking the silence surrounding such crimes.
