PASSPORT BAN FOR DUNDEE DOMESTIC ABUSER
A Dundee domestic abuser has been slapped with a passport ban amid fears he could flee the country.Hassan Mirza was ordered not to apply for any travel documents and to hand over any passport he receives as part of strict bail conditions imposed by the court.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard Mirza married his wife, also a Pakistani national, in October 2021.
She is living in Scotland on a spousal visa and cannot apply for long-term residency until 2028.
Mirza admitted a sustained campaign of domestic abuse lasting more than 16 months.
The court was told he seized his wife by the neck, shoved her onto a bed, smashed her mobile phone, and controlled who she was allowed to speak to.
Prosecutors also highlighted Mirza’s criminal past, revealing he was previously jailed for impersonating his deceased father to con benefits agencies and Dundee City Council out of almost £22,000.
Sheriffs considered remanding him in custody after hearing concerns he could abscond, given his connections to Sweden.
Mirza told the court he had travelled there to visit his former wife and children.
Police later searched his home following worries about his mental health, raised during discussions with officers.
Mirza pled guilty and will return to court for sentencing in March.
The court also heard submissions about the impact of publicity on his standing within his local community, including at the mosque he attends, but these concerns did not outweigh the seriousness of the offences.
