HARVINDER SINGH FROM SOUTHALL JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SCHOOLGIRL ON BUS

In a disturbing incident that took place in Southall, a man named Harvinder Singh was convicted and sentenced for committing a series of sexual offenses against a young girl on a public bus. The crime occurred in February on route 120, which runs between Hounslow and Southall, during the early morning hours around 7am. Singh, who was 24 years old at the time, sat beside the 15-year-old schoolgirl and initiated inappropriate physical contact, which quickly escalated into forcing her to perform sexual acts against her will.

The police report detailed that Singh’s actions were both heinous and calculated. The victim, in a brave act of self-preservation, pressed the ‘stop’ button on the bus, which allowed her to disembark at her stop and escape Singh’s immediate grasp. However, Singh did not give up and followed her as she made her way to her school, raising further concern for her safety. Fortunately, the girl was able to report the incident to authorities once she reached her school, providing crucial information that led to Singh’s swift arrest.

Singh was taken into custody the very next day, February 12, thanks to a combination of on-bus CCTV footage and DNA evidence collected from the scene. During police interviews, Singh chose to remain silent, responding with ‘no comment’ and refusing to cooperate. He was held in custody until his trial, which took place later in June.

At Isleworth Crown Court, Singh pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. The court sentenced him on June 5 to nine months in prison for the sexual assault charge and an additional 15 months for the offense of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. These sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve the longer term of 15 months in total.

In addition to his prison sentence, Singh has been placed on the Sexual Offenders Register for a period of ten years. Once he completes his jail term, he is set to be deported back to India, as part of the legal consequences of his actions.

Detective Superintendent Adnan Qureshi of the MPS Roads and Transport Policing Command expressed satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of swift police action and the role of evidence in securing the conviction. Qureshi stated, “This was an excellent result, which has seen the perpetrator of an appalling crime receive a lengthy time in jail and deportation on release. If you commit an offence on the transport network, we will pursue and arrest you.”

Furthermore, the investigation was partly funded by Transport for London (TfL), whose Director of Enforcement and On-Street Operations, Steve Burton, highlighted the seriousness with which such crimes are treated. Burton praised the victim’s bravery in reporting the incident, which enabled authorities to track down Singh and bring him to justice. He urged anyone who experiences any form of unwanted sexual behavior on public transport to report it immediately to the police via text message at 61016 or by calling 101. Burton reaffirmed TfL’s commitment to working closely with law enforcement agencies to eliminate this kind of behavior from the transport network, assuring the public that all reports are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
