SOUTHALL MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC MANSLAUGHTER AFTER ABUSE OF WIFE
Aftab Khan, aged 48, received a five-year prison sentence at The Old Bailey last week for manslaughter, after denying any involvement in murder. He had sought a divorce and tried to remove his wife, Shireen Khan, from their shared residence with their three children, but his request was denied.
The court was informed that Khan had exhibited abusive behavior towards his wife; notably, the night before the fatal incident, Mrs Khan contacted the police to request her husband's arrest due to his abusive actions.
However, the officers only issued a warning and left the scene.
The Southall Black Sisters, a notable women's rights organization, highlighted that authorities could have intervened more effectively to prevent her killing.
They pointed out that there was a documented history of domestic violence at the couple’s flat, which was overlooked, despite police having the authority to make arrests under positive action procedures.
The tragic event occurred in October last year when Khan strangled his wife at their Southall home, resulting in her death in hospital.
Mrs Khan was 46 years old at the time.
The case underscores the role of ongoing domestic abuse and police inaction in the tragic outcome, suggesting that earlier intervention could have averted the murder.
