2004: MANCHESTER MAN JAILED FOR INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN
2004: Gregory Ariev, aged 54, was convicted and received a six-month prison sentence after authorities found indecent images of children on his computer. The case arose after Ariev was seen taking photographs with a digital camera of young girls playing in the fountains at Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens last September.
The girls looked soaked from the water, prompting police to act quickly due to concerns about the nature of the images.
Investigations led officers to search Ariev’s residence on York Avenue, Prestwich, where they confiscated his camera, two flash memory cards, and his laptop.
Forensic analysis confirmed the presence of 61 indecent images of children and adults stored across his devices.
Ariev appeared in Manchester Crown Court, facing 16 charges of creating indecent photographs and a single count for possessing all 61 images.
Judge Anthony Ensor sentenced him to six months in prison, describing the images as “horrid” and “despicable,” and highlighting the grave issue of child exploitation.
His defense argued that Ariev, who has an interest in photography, was remorseful, explaining he had downloaded images from the internet, briefly viewed them without further intent, and was under psychiatric treatment at the time of the offence.
The court underscored the necessity of imprisonment for such crimes and emphasized the damaging effects of his actions.
