SCHIZOPHRENIC MAN JAILED FOR LIFE OVER MOTHER'S BRUTAL MURDER
Gregor Bauld, a 23-year-old man diagnosed with schizophrenia, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a hospital order following the murder of his mother, Christine Bauld, who was 55 years old.
The incident took place outside their family residence in Burbage on March 3.
Court proceedings revealed that Bauld believed his mother was the leader of a war tribe and held delusional beliefs that she was an alien and a paedophile.
Although a jury acquitted him of murder, they found him responsible for manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
He will initially receive psychiatric treatment in a hospital setting, and once deemed no longer a danger, he will be transferred to prison.
Evidence presented included CCTV footage showing Bauld chasing his mother wielding a kitchen knife before attacking her in a frenzied manner following an argument about his drug use.
The judge called the murder "awful beyond imagination" and "brutal, shocking." Bauld suffered four stab wounds, with the cause of death identified as a wound to the back by a pathologist.
His defense argued that he was severely mentally ill, with high levels of schizophrenia, and that he remained a threat to both himself and others despite being under intensive supervision and medical treatment.
The prosecution pointed out Bauld’s extended use of illegal drugs, which they said contributed to his mental health issues, and noted that he was aware of the drug effects but continued using them prior to the attack.
