MAN, 73, WHO CUT WIFE’S THROAT IN SUICIDE PACT CLEARED OF MURDER
Graham Mansfield, a 73-year-old resident of Hale in Greater Manchester, was involved in a tragic event in which he slit his wife Dyanne's throat in their garden at around 9 pm on 23 March.Mansfield explained that his actions were driven by love and compassion, as his wife, who was terminally ill with cancer, had asked him to end her life when she said, 'Take me when things get bad for me.' Following the incident, Mansfield attempted to take his own life but regained consciousness about an hour later.
He later contacted emergency services to confess what had happened.
Authorities found several notes at the scene, including one that read, 'We have decided to take our own lives,' along with instructions and apologies.
He was charged with murder but was ultimately acquitted and instead received a two-year suspended sentence for manslaughter.
The judge highlighted that the act was motivated by his wife’s terminal illness and viewed it as an act of love.
Mansfield expressed his gratitude to the police and called for legislative change regarding assisted dying, stating, 'The law needs to change.
Nobody should have to go through what we went through.' The court regarded the circumstances as exceptional, and Mansfield, described as a positive individual, reflected on a difficult past year but emphasized he had no plans to attempt suicide again.
The case drew attention to grief, love, and ongoing legal debates about assisted dying.
