TEACHER WHO KISSED PUPIL IN DUNDEE NIGHTCLUB AVOIDS BEING STRUCK OFF
A physical education instructor from Dundee, Graham Hopkins, will keep his teaching position after being officially reprimanded for a personal incident at a nightclub. In December 2014, Mr Hopkins acknowledged that he kissed a female pupil at Liquid Nightclub.
He also admitted to socializing with her and another female, who he knew or suspected was under 18, but did not inform school management about the girls' ages.
Furthermore, he acknowledged taking photos with the pupils at the nightclub.
The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) reviewed the case and decided not to remove him from the register, despite his failure to disclose the pupils' likely underage status.
Mr Hopkins chose not to challenge the charges in a full hearing, opting instead to admit them in writing.
The panel noted that no physical injury resulted from the incident, and that he demonstrated genuine remorse.
They also described the misconduct as an isolated event.
As part of his professional record, the reprimand will be held for one year to maintain public confidence in teachers.
Overall, the investigation found that his actions impacted his fitness to teach, but given his good character and lack of repeated issues, no further sanctions were deemed necessary.
