BROWN EDGE GRANDAD GRAHAM GIBSON CAUGHT DOWNLOADING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN STOKE-ON-TRENT

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Brown Edge, Graham Gibson, a 53-year-old grandfather, was found to have engaged in the illegal and highly disturbing activity of downloading numerous indecent images of children. The incident came to light after police investigations uncovered his illicit online activity, revealing a pattern of disturbing searches and downloads that have now led to serious legal consequences.

On January 8, 2013, officers from the Stoke-on-Trent police force attended Gibson’s residence on Marshall Avenue in Brown Edge. During their visit, they seized his computer for forensic analysis. The subsequent examination uncovered a troubling collection of images stored on his device, with a total of 448 images classified as level one — the least severe category of child exploitation images. In addition, there were 29 images at level two, 81 at level three, 86 at level four, and three at level five, which is considered the most serious and involves the depiction of actual children being exploited.

Prosecutor Joanne Wallbanks detailed the nature of Gibson’s online activity during the court proceedings, revealing that he had conducted internet searches for terms such as ‘tiny models,’ ‘underage teens,’ and ‘underage rape.’ These searches indicated a deliberate attempt to access and view illegal material involving minors. During his police interview, Gibson claimed that he was searching for cars and that he was unaware of the nature of the content he was viewing. He stated that he encountered pop-up advertisements on his computer, which he claimed were increasingly targeting younger individuals, and that he was simply trying to browse for legitimate interests.

Despite his claims of innocence regarding the intent, Gibson admitted to guilt on the day of his trial, pleading guilty to five charges of making indecent photographs of children. The offences spanned from November 13, 2012, to January 8, 2013, and involved the deliberate downloading and viewing of illegal images.

Gibson, who has no previous criminal record, was represented in court by his legal counsel, Anthony Longworth. The defense argued that Gibson had purchased a second-hand computer that was infected with a virus, which could have led to innocent searches inadvertently resulting in exposure to illegal content. However, the defense acknowledged that Gibson had intentionally searched for and accessed child pornography, suggesting that he had succumbed to temptation during a brief period of time. Mr. Longworth emphasized that Gibson was not known to have any prior sexual interest in children and expressed that his actions were impulsive and out of character.

The court heard that Gibson and his family have found it extremely difficult to come to terms with his offending, which was entirely inconsistent with their perception of him as a person. The judge, Judge David Fletcher, sentenced Gibson to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years. Additionally, Gibson was ordered to undergo two years of supervision, adhere to a six-month electronically monitored curfew from 7pm to 7am, and register as a sex offender for a period of ten years. He was also subjected to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, aimed at preventing any future offending.

Judge Fletcher addressed the gravity of the case, stating, “These were images of real children. They were mercilessly exploited so people can look at the images.” The ruling underscores the serious nature of the offence and the ongoing threat posed by individuals who seek to access and distribute child exploitation material, even if their actions are driven by curiosity or temptation.
