GORDON LAVERTY FROM WIGTON SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY INVOLVING KING CHARLES SPANIELS IN CUMBRIA

Gordon Laverty, a dog breeder originally from Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, has been at the center of a serious animal welfare case that has garnered significant attention in Cumbria. As of 2019, Laverty was residing at Prospect, Aspatria, Wigton, with the postcode CA7 2LR. His involvement in neglecting and causing suffering to King Charles spaniels led to a court hearing where he faced multiple charges.

Laverty was found guilty of ten animal welfare offences, which included four counts of causing unnecessary suffering to dogs and six counts of failing to meet the basic needs of the animals under his care. The case came to light in June 2013 when a severely malnourished dog managed to escape from Laverty’s property and was subsequently taken to a veterinarian for treatment. This incident prompted authorities to investigate further.

Microchip records linked to Laverty’s address revealed the presence of several animals living in deplorable conditions. Upon inspection, authorities discovered that the King Charles spaniels at his residence were in a state of extreme neglect. Witnesses described the dogs as being severely starved, unable to stand, and suffering from badly matted coats, indicating prolonged periods of neglect and poor care. Many of these animals were rescued from Laverty’s filthy kennels, which were reportedly in a state of squalor.

The case drew the attention of animal welfare advocate Catherine Southwell, who established the charity Cavaliers in Need in response to the distressing conditions she observed. She recounted the scene, describing it as “horrific,” and expressed her concern for the suffering animals.

During the court proceedings, it was noted that six of the dogs were voluntarily surrendered by Laverty. His legal representative, Michael Boyd, stated that Laverty was “deeply ashamed about what happened to these animals in his care.” The defense also highlighted that Laverty had a “long record of keeping animals properly and humanely,” and mentioned his ongoing health issues, as he was seen entering court with the aid of a walking device.

Judge Nixon delivered the verdict, emphasizing that Laverty’s early plea and clean record prior to this incident influenced the sentencing. Laverty was sentenced to a ten-month jail term, which was suspended for two years. Additionally, he was banned from owning or caring for any animals for a period of 20 years, a restriction that will remain until 2035. The court also ordered Laverty to pay over £700 in veterinary and legal costs.

Outside the courtroom, Ms. Southwell, accompanied by volunteers from Cavaliers in Need, was visibly emotional. She expressed her disappointment that Laverty did not receive an immediate prison sentence but acknowledged that the 20-year ban was a positive outcome. She stated, “Obviously we would have liked an immediate prison sentence, but the 20-year ban was good.” The case underscores ongoing concerns about animal cruelty and the importance of strict enforcement of animal welfare laws in the region.
