GLENN ROBERTS' SHOCKING CRIMES IN ABERGELE: PAEDOPHILE'S REIGN OF DECEPTION AND ABUSE REVEALED

In August 2017, Glenn Roberts, a man with a dark and disturbing history, faced the consequences of his actions in a case that has shocked the community of Abergele. Roberts, aged 31, who had previously been convicted of downloading indecent images of children—including some of the most extreme categories—was sentenced to a three-year community order at Caernarfon Crown Court. His prior conviction had resulted in a 12-month jail term, and he was released from prison in October of the previous year. Despite his release, Roberts continued to breach the conditions of his sex offender registration, leading to further legal repercussions.

Roberts, residing on Kinmel Avenue in Abergele, admitted to three breaches of the sex offenders’ act during his court appearance. The prosecution, led by Michael Whitty, outlined how Roberts had violated the law by using an alias on a swingers’ dating website without informing the authorities, failing to disclose that he was in the company of a minor, and neglecting to notify the police of his change of address. These breaches raised serious concerns about his ongoing compliance and potential risk to the public.

Further details revealed that after his release from incarceration, Roberts had established a relationship with a woman through an online dating platform. The court heard that the couple had agreed to meet in person, and they subsequently spent time together at her residence. During these visits, Roberts was left alone with her young child for approximately 20 minutes while she took a shower. The relationship also involved days out together, indicating a level of familiarity and trust that Roberts exploited. The prosecution highlighted an incident where Roberts spoke to his father using a different name, prompting the woman to challenge him and contact the police. Judge Huw Rees commented on this deception, noting that when Roberts introduced himself as Glenn to his father, claiming it was a nickname, the woman did not believe his explanation.

Roberts, who remains on the sex offenders’ register and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order until 2026, was sentenced with the aim of protecting the community. Judge Rees emphasized that further measures are necessary to prevent Roberts from having any contact with children, as he is explicitly prohibited from such interactions. The court imposed a three-year community order, which includes participation in a sexual offenders’ rehabilitation program lasting 56 days. The judge underscored the gravity of the case, stating, “This is your last chance to get yourself sorted out,” and stressed the importance of ongoing supervision and treatment to address his tendencies.

In a related and deeply disturbing context, Roberts’ former partner, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed the emotional toll of discovering his crimes. She recounted how she had been in a relationship with Roberts for 13 years, only learning of his involvement with child abuse images two weeks prior to his court appearance. She described her shock and devastation upon discovering that Roberts had been hiding a secret of such magnitude. She explained that for years, Roberts had made excuses to avoid living with her or starting a family, and she believed he was suffering from a nervous breakdown last June, unaware of the police raid on his home. The raid had uncovered 147 still images, including 18 of the most severe kind, along with 182 videos, 53 of which were classified as extreme. The ages of the children depicted ranged from as young as two-and-a-half to 16 years old.

Her account detailed how she only found out the truth when she visited his mother’s house in June and was told Roberts was unwell and refused to see her. She described his strange behavior, his move from his mother’s to his father’s couch, and his repeated lies to cover his tracks. She recounted a trip to Greece for his 30th birthday in September, during which Roberts was on police bail, yet he managed to conceal his legal issues from her. The woman expressed her feelings of betrayal, stating, “I had no idea. I was completely kept in the dark and I feel sick that he’s been around my friend’s and family’s children.”

Her distress deepened when she learned of his crimes, especially after she questioned his mental state and his mother confirmed police presence at their home. She described her shock and disbelief, recalling how she had planned a celebration for their 13th anniversary in April, only to discover the truth days before. Her confrontation with Roberts’ mother and her subsequent realization that Roberts had been hiding his criminal activities left her devastated. She sent Roberts a heartfelt message saying, “I loved you, how could you do this?” but received no reply. Her account underscores the profound betrayal and emotional trauma inflicted by Roberts’ actions.

During the court proceedings, Roberts pleaded guilty to 12 charges related to the possession and making of indecent images. The presiding judge, Mr. Recorder Peter Griffiths QC, highlighted the aggravating factor of the young ages of some of the children involved in the images. Gwyndaf Pari, defending Roberts, argued that his client’s viewing of such material was driven by social and physical isolation, and that his family wished to support him in turning his life around. Despite these pleas, the judge determined that an immediate custodial sentence was necessary to protect the public. Roberts was consequently placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same duration.

Roberts’ former partner expressed her shock and disgust, stating, “I’m in shock. I am distraught and disgusted. He didn’t even have the decency to tell me about the court case after all the years we were together. I would have found out through the papers. The fact that I knew nothing about all of this has absolutely destroyed me.” The case has left a lasting impact on those close to Roberts and has raised serious concerns about safeguarding and the importance of vigilance within the community of Abergele.
