GLENN OVERTON FROM WILKINSON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN HULL

In March 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving Glenn Overton, a man from Wilkinson, who was found guilty of heinous sexual offenses against a young girl. The case was brought to light after authorities uncovered a pattern of manipulation and abuse carried out by Overton-Wilkinson, who exploited the vulnerability of a young victim to commit his crimes.

Overton-Wilkinson, aged 59 and residing on Waterside Road in Beverley, engaged in a series of predatory acts that included the use of a small, intrusive probing camera equipped with a hot light. This device was used to take highly invasive photographs of the girl’s private areas. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that he falsely claimed these images would be sent to a doctor to assist other girls with similar issues, thereby deceiving the young victim into compliance.

The court heard that Overton-Wilkinson’s actions involved burning the girl’s intimate skin with the hot light on the camera, causing physical harm. His manipulative tactics extended to threats, warning her of consequences if she reported the abuse. The abuse was not an isolated incident; police investigations uncovered that Overton-Wilkinson had been accessing and possessing approximately 3,000 indecent images, including videos, of children dating back to May 2016 through November 2019.

Prosecutor Simon Reevell detailed how Overton-Wilkinson’s obsession with the girl led to persistent exploitation over a prolonged period. The court was informed that he had a prior conviction from nearly two decades ago for possessing indecent images of children, indicating a long-standing pattern of deviant behavior. Overton-Wilkinson openly acknowledged his sexual interest in children, which the judge described as an entrenched and long-standing deviant sexual interest.

Judge David Tremberg addressed Overton-Wilkinson directly, criticizing the community order previously imposed on him as insufficient to address his dangerous tendencies. The judge emphasized that his ongoing deviant interests and past offenses demonstrated a clear risk of reoffending, especially if he were to escalate to contact offenses. The judge expressed concern that Overton-Wilkinson’s actions were driven by a failure or unwillingness to seek help or change.

He described the manipulation of the girl as particularly egregious, noting her vulnerability due to her age, naivety, and gullibility. The offenses were committed over an extended period, with the girl suffering significant emotional harm. The judge highlighted that the abuse only ceased because Overton-Wilkinson was caught, warning that if left unchecked, the situation could have worsened. The emotional trauma inflicted on the girl was profound, and the long-term psychological effects could manifest over years or even decades, including feelings of shame and humiliation.

In light of the severity of his crimes, Overton-Wilkinson was sentenced to nine years in prison. Additionally, he will serve an extended license period of one year upon release. The court also imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct and protect others from potential harm.
