GLEN GRADY SALFORD SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE IN WIGAN AND SALFORD

In December 2011, a disturbing case of sexual abuse and exploitation came to a close at Liverpool Crown Court involving Glen Grady, a man with a long history of criminal behavior rooted in drug addiction and a reckless lifestyle. Grady, who resided on Elmira Way in Salford, was found guilty of heinous crimes committed against two young girls from Wigan, with his actions spanning several years and leaving lasting scars on his victims.

Judge Robert Warnock sentenced Grady to a substantial prison term of 18 years, emphasizing the severity and brutality of his offenses. The judge described Grady as having led a “totally selfish and feral life,” highlighting how he manipulated and corrupted one of his victims by introducing her to drugs and alcohol, effectively disinhibiting her and making her more vulnerable to his predatory behavior. The court heard that Grady, in a manner reminiscent of the fictional character Fagin, not only sexually abused the girl but also taught her to shoplift to support his alcohol and drug habits, further entrenching her in a cycle of criminality and abuse.

Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Grady had raped the first girl multiple times while she was between the ages of 13 and 18. Additionally, he was convicted of raping a second girl when she was aged between 14 and 15. The court heard that Grady’s crimes against these young women were particularly disturbing, with the judge describing the offenses as “truly horrifying.” The first victim, who later gave birth to Grady’s child, expressed her relief and satisfaction with the sentence, stating she was “over the moon.”

During the proceedings, Grady showed no visible remorse and maintained a dismissive attitude, claiming that the victims were either lying or fantasizing about the incidents. The prosecution, led by Simon Killeen, explained that the crimes only came to light after both women, now adults, courageously came forward to recount their traumatic experiences and how Grady had stolen their childhoods. It was also disclosed that Grady allegedly had sexual relations with another underage girl; however, she chose not to pursue legal action.

Defense attorney Mark Rhind described Grady as having lived an almost feral existence, driven by his addiction to Class A drugs. Rhind painted a picture of a man who was now a “wreck of a man,” suffering from depression and having attempted to take his own life recently. He argued that Grady had changed significantly since the time of the offenses and was now a different person, though the court was unpersuaded. As part of his sentence, Grady was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Amanda Goulding from the Leigh Public Protection Investigation Unit expressed her satisfaction that justice had been served after years of anguish for the victims. She praised their bravery in coming forward and urged others who might be suffering in silence to seek help and report abuse. The police reaffirmed their commitment to taking all reports of sexual violence seriously, regardless of how much time has passed. Support services such as the St Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Manchester are available 24/7 for victims seeking forensic, medical, and counseling assistance. Anyone affected by sexual assault or rape is encouraged to contact Greater Manchester Police at 101 or 999 in emergencies, knowing that trained officers are ready to support them through the criminal justice process.
