GIDEON CURRIE FROM CLYDEBANK ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD ABUSE IMAGE CHARGES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Clydebank and the wider Glasgow area, Gideon Currie, aged 27, has once again avoided imprisonment despite being found in possession of highly disturbing child abuse images. Currie’s criminal history is marred by his previous conviction for similar offenses, and his recent actions have only deepened concerns about his ongoing threat to the public.

Currie’s troubling activities came to light after he was caught hoarding a new collection of illicit images, some depicting children as young as two being molested. This discovery followed an earlier conviction in 2016, when he was sentenced for taking indecent photographs of children. Despite this, Currie managed to evade jail time and was instead placed under a social work supervision order for three years, with a tag for just six months. His repeated offenses have raised serious questions about the adequacy of the penalties imposed and the potential risk he continues to pose.

Adding to the gravity of his misconduct, Currie used a false identity, adopting the name Matthew Sweeney, to ingratiate himself with political figures and manipulate perceptions of his character. His involvement in grassroots politics was particularly insidious, as he sought to build connections with local politicians after fleeing his family home in Clydebank, near Glasgow. His efforts to embed himself within the political scene included attending campaign events with prominent Labour figures during the run-up to the May last year’s council elections.

Photographs surfaced showing Currie in a red sweatshirt alongside Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and West of Scotland MSP Neil Bibby. In one image, he is seen wearing a lanyard and tie, standing close to Sarwar, who has a hand on Currie’s shoulder. Currie falsely claimed to be a councillor, even sending letters bearing the Labour party logo, asserting he had been an elected member for five years. In one such letter to a disabled pensioner, he falsely stated he was a “close pal” of Mr Bibby and requested to visit her, further demonstrating his manipulative tendencies.

His criminal record also includes threats and harassment. He threatened two men after obtaining private photographs of them, which he then shared with their friends and family, causing significant distress. The victims, a 26-year-old man and his 23-year-old partner, were left traumatised after Currie accessed their private online photos, which had been stored securely. The victims reported the incident to police, leading to an investigation that uncovered a new cache of child abuse images, intensifying concerns about Currie’s ongoing activities.

Earlier this month, Currie was sentenced at Dumbarton Sheriff Court for possessing indecent images of children and for sending threats to the two men, as well as distributing their photos to others. His previous conviction in May 2016 involved taking indecent photographs of children, for which he was placed on the sex offenders register for 30 months. At that time, he admitted to taking or permitting the taking of indecent images of two children at his home in Kirkwood Avenue, Linnvale.

Despite the severity of his offenses, Currie received a community payback order, including 30 months of supervision and 100 hours of unpaid community work, along with his registration as a sex offender. The case highlights ongoing concerns about the monitoring and management of individuals with a history of child exploitation and abuse, especially those who continue to pose a threat to society despite previous convictions and penalties.
