GERRALD HARRISON FROM REDCAR AND SALTBURN CAUGHT WITH THOUSANDS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Redcar and Saltburn, police uncovered a large cache of indecent images of children during a raid on the residence of Gerrald Harrison, a 62-year-old man from East Cleveland. The investigation revealed that Harrison had accumulated a staggering total of 4,227 indecent photographs depicting minors, a discovery that has prompted serious legal consequences.

Harrison, who has been divorced for 28 years, was taken into custody at his home in Redcar on May 31, 2012. During the police interrogation, he was notably frank about his possession of the illicit material. He claimed to live alone and insisted that all the computer equipment and images found on his devices belonged solely to him. The authorities confirmed that all the digital evidence, including computers and DVDs, would be destroyed in accordance with a court order issued by Teesside Crown Court.

Prosecutor Sue Jacobs detailed the extent of the material found, stating that Harrison admitted to the police that there were more than 1,000 indecent images of children stored on his computers and DVDs. The total count, however, reached 4,227 images, highlighting the severity of the case. The police investigation uncovered a disturbing collection that has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of minors depicted in these images.

Harrison’s defense lawyer, Graham Brown, pointed out that his client had no prior criminal record, emphasizing that Harrison’s honesty during police questioning was unusual and could be viewed as a positive factor. Brown suggested that this candor might facilitate Harrison’s participation in a probation-led sexual offender treatment program, which could aid in his rehabilitation.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, addressed the court and the defendant directly. He remarked that an immediate prison sentence would likely result in Harrison being released within a few months without any form of supervision, which could pose ongoing risks. The judge emphasized the importance of addressing such offenses with appropriate measures to prevent future harm, stating, “Without people like you there would not be a market for such images.”

As a result, Harrison, formerly residing on Micklow Close in Redcar and now living on Abingdon Road in Easington, Saltburn, was sentenced to a 10-month jail term, suspended for two years. His sentence includes mandatory supervision, participation in a two-year internet sex offender treatment program, and an indefinite sexual offences prevention order that restricts his internet use and contact with minors. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. All the digital images and computer equipment linked to his offenses will be destroyed, ensuring they are removed from circulation.

Harrison pleaded guilty to 19 charges, which included making and possessing indecent images of children as well as possessing extreme pornography. His case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and the serious legal repercussions faced by those involved in such crimes.
