GEORGE SMITH FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL IN TOWN CEMETERY
In March 2016, George Smith of Park Lane, Darlington, was sentenced to four years in prison for sexually abusing a young girl.Smith lured his victim with sweets and money before engaging in sexual acts with her in a cemetery located on North Road, Darlington.
He also indecently assaulted her and was accused of attempting to rape her twice, including once in a caravan belonging to his family.
During the court hearing, Recorder Bernard Gateshill imposed the sentence, and at that moment, a woman in the public gallery fled the court, crying hysterically.
Prosecutors described how, in the cemetery, the young girl did not fully understand what Smith was doing but was aware that it wasn't right.
She recalled hearing people pass by and Smith placing his finger over her mouth whispering, 'shhh.' The prosecution stated that Smith would whistle to attract the victim's attention and would bribe her with sweets and money.
When arrested, Smith denied all allegations, claiming the victim was mistaken and that he was not the only person named George Smith in the area.
