SEAHAM MAN GEOFFREY HUNTER ESCAPES PRISON AFTER DOWNLOADS OF CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In July 2018, Geoffrey Hunter, a man from Seaham, faced serious allegations after it was revealed that he had been involved in the possession and download of a vast collection of indecent images of children over a period of ten years. Hunter, a former swimming instructor, narrowly avoided a custodial sentence despite the gravity of his actions.

Authorities became aware of Hunter’s activities when police received information indicating that his internet connection had been used for the illegal downloading of such material. A raid was conducted at his residence, where officers discovered multiple electronic devices, including computers, phones, and storage media. The primary evidence was found on a computer tower, which contained a significant number of images and videos.

According to prosecutor Ian West, the collection included approximately five thousand images classified as the least serious category C, along with 22 videos of the same category. Additionally, there were four images and five videos categorized as B, which are considered more serious. The most disturbing content was comprised of three hours of videos classified as category A, indicating the most severe level of indecency. Hunter admitted to police that he had downloaded these images but was unable to explain his motives. He claimed he had no sexual interest in children, a statement that was met with skepticism.

Further investigation revealed that some images had been opened and subsequently deleted, while others had been deliberately stored in specific files, suggesting an intent to keep the material. Search terms used on Hunter’s devices indicated that he actively sought out this content, rather than encountering it by chance. This pattern of behavior demonstrated a clear deliberate pursuit of illegal material.

At Durham Crown Court, Hunter, aged 63 and residing on Grant’s Crescent in Seaham, pleaded guilty to three charges of downloading indecent images of children, with offenses spanning from 2007 to 2017. During the proceedings, the court was informed that Hunter has three grandchildren, raising concerns about potential risks to his family.

In mitigation, Hunter’s defense was quickly curtailed when Judge Jonathon Carroll indicated that he intended to impose a suspended sentence. The judge sentenced Hunter to nine months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities, including sex offender treatment. Additionally, a sexual harm prevention order was issued, restricting Hunter’s internet use for ten years. The judge emphasized that Hunter’s actions demonstrated paedophile tendencies, noting that he actively sought out the illegal material rather than stumbling upon it. While there was no direct contact with children, the court recognized that by providing a market for such content, Hunter was contributing to the ongoing abuse of minors.

Judge Carroll made it clear that Hunter’s previous good character warranted a chance for rehabilitation, but warned that any breach of the conditions would result in immediate imprisonment. Hunter was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years, underscoring the seriousness of his offenses and the potential risk posed to the community.
