DUNDEE WOMAN GETS PRISON AND RESTRICTION ORDER FOR HIT-AND-RUN ASSAULT
A woman who intentionally struck a teenager with her car during a heated dispute on a busy Dundee street has been sentenced more than three years after the incident.Gemma Duncan drove her Peugeot 207 across the road and hit the 18-year-old on the leg in June 2022.
Duncan then collided with a shop, and the teenager, whom she did not know, managed to limp away after being assaulted by another individual.
The Dundee Sheriff Court heard that Duncan’s ex-partner, George Stark, along with Christopher Wilkie and others, encountered the teenager and his 12-year-old sister, who fled out of fear.
The parties involved were strangers to each other, but Wilkie engaged in a confrontation with the victim, who stood his ground.
Prosecutor Rachel Hill explained that around the same time, Duncan was driving south on Albert Street and stopped on the opposite side of the road.
Her car cut across traffic, forcing other vehicles to halt, then mounted the pavement and struck the young man on his back left leg, causing him to fall onto the bonnet of her car.
The teenager sustained a two-inch cut on his right shin and a one-inch abrasion on his left forearm.
The incident was recorded on CCTV footage, and Duncan pleaded guilty in March to assaulting the teenager by driving towards oncoming traffic, mounting the pavement, hitting him, and colliding with a shop at 114-116 Albert Street.
However, she later downplayed her responsibility during an interview with social workers.
Sheriff Paul Brown expressed concern that Duncan had not fully engaged with social work requirements, including drug testing and mental health appointments.
Despite these issues, she was sentenced to a restriction of liberty order (from 7 pm to 7 am) for twelve months and three years of supervised drug treatment.
Additionally, Duncan was disqualified from driving for three years.
Sheriff Brown warned her that any further issues could result in imprisonment.
Wilkie received a three-month custodial sentence in November 2023 for assaulting the teenager.
