DERBYSHIRE MOTHER GEMMA BARTON JAILED FOR 10 YEARS OVER CHILD'S DEATH
Gemma Barton, aged 33, received a sentence of 10 years imprisonment after being found guilty of causing or permitting the death of her 10-month-old son Jacob Crouch and of child cruelty.Judge Justice Kerr highlighted that Barton did not confront clear evidence of abuse by her stepfather, Craig Crouch, aged 39.
Although recognizing that Barton was herself a victim of domestic violence from Craig Crouch, the judge pointed out that she failed to take action to prevent Jacob from suffering abuse, which involved multiple injuries such as 39 fractured ribs, 19 visible bruises, and internal damage.
The injuries ultimately led to Jacob’s death from a fatal infection caused by a traumatic bowel injury, inflicted by Craig Crouch, who was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years.
It was revealed that earlier medical intervention could have saved Jacob’s life, and that Barton was aware—or should have been aware—of the dangers but did not act out of misplaced affection.
The case was described as involving a 'culture of cruelty' within the family home in Derbyshire, with detectives calling it 'particularly harrowing.' Outside court, officials offered their condolences and expressed hopes for closure.
The NSPCC commented that Jacob's life was marred by violence and cruelty, and encouraged anyone concerned about child safety to report suspicions to authorities.
