GARY SHORT OF SOUTH SHIELDS SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR ABUSING 5-YEAR-OLD BOY IN PUBLIC TOILETS AND ALLEYWAYS

** update April 2026 A man responsible for exploiting a young boy and robbing him of his childhood was described as a "monster" by his victim.

Gary Short, who is already serving a 20-year term for abusing another child, faces additional time behind bars.

The case, heard at Newcastle Crown Court, revealed that after one assault, Short handed the boy 50p and told him to keep it a secret.

He also committed an act of sexual abuse in a public toilet located in South Tyneside.

Short was convicted by a jury on four counts of indecency with a child and one count of indecent assault.

He received an 11-year sentence that will be served consecutively to his existing imprisonment.

_______________________________________________ In a case that has shocked the community of South Shields, Gary Short, a 49-year-old man from South Frederick Street, was convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses involving a young boy and was subsequently sentenced to a lengthy prison term.

The crimes, which spanned multiple locations including public toilets and alleyways within the town, have left a lasting scar on the victim and the local community alike.

During the trial at Newcastle Crown Court, the court heard disturbing details of Short’s actions, which included stalking and assaulting a five-year-old boy.

The victim, now an adult, bravely delivered a powerful victim impact statement from the witness box, describing how the abuse had devastated his life.

He recounted how the trauma had left him emotionally unstable, with difficulty forming relationships, especially with women, and struggling to maintain employment due to stress and emotional distress.

The victim detailed how the abuse had shattered every aspect of his life, stating, “I feel every aspect of my life has been shattered by Gary Short.

Even to this day it still affects me, I exist day to day feeling trapped.” He explained that he often experiences unexplained anger and emotional outbursts, which he attributes to the trauma inflicted by Short.

The victim also revealed that the triggers for his distress are pervasive, ranging from encountering someone named Gary to simple acts like going for coffee and walking into a toilet.

Despite the severity of the crimes, Gary Short maintained his innocence, denying all 13 charges against him, which included attempted rape, indecency with a child, and indecent assault.

However, after a jury deliberation, he was found guilty of all charges last year.

The court heard how Short, who works as a manual laborer, exploited the vulnerability of the young boy on multiple occasions, with the assaults occurring in various locations around South Shields.

The victim expressed his frustration and pain, emphasizing that Short has never accepted responsibility or offered an apology for his actions.

“He has made me relive the abuse again,” the victim said.

“I was so young, so vulnerable, so powerless, and he knew that.

I hope he finally realises the damage he has caused and justice is served by him being removed so he can’t hurt another child.” Judge Robert Adams delivered the sentence, condemning Short to 20 years in prison, with an extended license period of an additional year that will impose strict conditions.

The judge also ordered Short to register as a sex offender and adhere to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Adams highlighted the nature and locations of the offenses, noting that they took place in “public lavatories and alleyways,” emphasizing the danger posed by Short’s actions.

“At the time of the offending, you clearly were a dangerous offender,” Judge Adams stated.

“You created a significant risk of causing serious harm.

You continue to pose a high risk of such offending, and you currently pose a significant risk of causing serious harm to members of the public.” The case underscores the ongoing threat posed by individuals like Short and the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
