HEROIN ADDICT GARRY KANE GETS LIFE FOR GRANDMOTHER'S MURDER
A man with a heroin addiction has received a life sentence for the murder of his grandmother at her residence in South Lanarkshire. The 41-year-old Garry Kane denied assaulting 87-year-old Kathleen Milward at her home in Stonehouse on January 3, 2012.
Following a court trial, he was found guilty of the elderly woman’s murder, who had sustained 15 injuries to her head and neck due to blunt force trauma.
The judge, Lord Matthews, imposed a minimum term of 17 years before Kane could be considered for parole.
During the proceedings, Kane’s family members offered differing opinions; his mother Kathleen insisted he was innocent and intended to appeal, emphasizing their strong bond, whereas his aunt Maureen Kennedy believed he was responsible.
Evidence indicated Kane had left home to acquire drugs, then returned and discovered his grandmother on the kitchen floor, after which he performed CPR.
Bloodstains matching her blood type were found on his jeans and boots.
An autopsy confirmed she had 26 injuries, 15 of which on her head and neck, caused by blunt force, significantly contributing to her death.
Testimony from drug dealer David McFarlane revealed Kane purchased heroin the day following the incident.
The jury convicted Kane of murder by majority verdict, considering the violent nature of the attack and the evidence presented against him.
