GARETH WEEKS FROM EXMOUTH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN DEVON

In December 2020, Gareth Weeks, a former theatre stage manager based in Exmouth, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after admitting to a series of serious sexual offences involving a 14-year-old boy.

The case revealed disturbing details of Weeks' grooming and abuse, which took place over several months and included multiple instances of sexual activity, filming, and distribution of indecent images.

Weeks, aged 52 and residing at Bassetts Gardens in Exmouth, had a long history of criminal behavior related to child sexual offences.

He had previously been convicted in 1993 and 2012 for similar crimes, yet he continued to involve himself in volunteer work within the theatre community in Devon, even after his past convictions.

Despite being under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) and on prison licence, he managed to maintain contact with children and was actively involved in organizing theatre productions until his arrest.

The police investigation was initiated after authorities discovered incriminating messages and images on a man’s phone, which they traced back to Weeks.

The detectives from the child protection team uncovered that Weeks was still subject to legal restrictions that prohibited any contact with minors.

His actions came to light when police found evidence of his communication with the victim, which included grooming messages, explicit photographs, and videos of the assaults he committed.

Weeks had initially contacted the boy through Grindr in 2018, claiming he could help him with personal issues related to his sexuality.

The boy, seeking companionship and understanding, had hoped to find someone his own age but instead fell prey to Weeks’ manipulative tactics.

Their first meeting was arranged at Weeks’ home, where he attempted to initiate sexual activity.

The boy declined but agreed to meet again two weeks later, during which Weeks blindfolded and restrained him, engaging in sexual acts.

These encounters were secretly filmed by Weeks, who later shared the footage with other paedophiles and exchanged disturbing fantasies about having sex with even younger boys, including those as young as 12.

Further messages revealed Weeks’ intentions to involve the boy in a threesome with another man, and he expressed a disturbing preference for boys of a very young age.

In one message, he explicitly stated, “I love boys your age, and younger to be honest.” The evidence also showed that Weeks was actively encouraging others to contact the boy and participate in similar activities, demonstrating a pattern of predatory behavior.

During the trial at Exeter Crown Court, Judge Timothy Rose described Weeks’ actions as “remarkably serious” and emphasized the harm inflicted on the vulnerable victim.

The judge pointed out that Weeks’ conduct was entirely self-serving, with no regard for the boy’s well-being, and that his messages and actions revealed a disturbing desire to harm and exploit the young victim.

Prosecutor James Tucker detailed how Weeks had made contact with the boy within hours of the boy posting a Grindr profile.

The court heard that Weeks arranged meetings at his home, where he engaged in sexual acts and filmed the encounters without the boy’s knowledge.

The evidence included images and videos of these assaults, which Weeks later shared with other offenders.

The messages exchanged also indicated that Weeks was in contact with other paedophiles, discussing plans and fantasies involving the boy.

In addition to the sexual activity, Weeks admitted to multiple offences involving indecent photographs of the boy, including taking, making, and distributing images classified as Category A, the most serious level.

He also pleaded guilty to inciting the boy to engage in penetrative sexual activity and to facilitating a child sex offence.

Despite his criminal history and the restrictions placed upon him, Weeks continued to pose a significant threat.

His actions led to his being certified as a dangerous offender, and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison with an extended six-year licence.

The court also ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

Judge Rose warned Weeks that he faces a minimum of 10 years before eligibility for parole, emphasizing the gravity of his offences and the need to protect the public from further harm.

The case underscores the ongoing dangers posed by individuals with a history of sexual offences, especially those who continue to breach legal restrictions and exploit vulnerable minors in the community of Exmouth and beyond.
