GARETH THORPE SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN DOWNHAM MARKET NEAR HIGHGATE INFANT SCHOOL

In a case that has shocked the local community of Downham Market, Gareth Thorpe, aged 39, was handed a substantial prison sentence after being convicted of a brutal sexual assault that took place near Highgate Infant School on Gaywood Road. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 27 last year, involved Thorpe attacking a young woman who was walking alone following an argument with her boyfriend.

According to court proceedings, the victim, who was in her early twenties, was unable to fully recall the details of the assault due to intoxication at the time. However, it was established that Thorpe had forcibly pulled down her tights and raped her in an alleyway. The attack left her with physical injuries, including cuts and a broken tooth, and emotional trauma that has significantly impacted her life.

Prosecutor Marc Brown explained that the victim, who chose not to attend the sentencing hearing, now suffers from depression, anxiety, and a loss of confidence. She has also lost her employment as a consequence of the attack, highlighting the profound and lasting effects of the crime.

Gareth Thorpe, who resides on James Scott Close in Downham Market, denied the charges of rape. Despite his denial, he was found guilty after a six-day trial. During the proceedings, it was revealed that Thorpe has an extensive criminal history, with 52 convictions spanning 116 offenses dating back to 1995. His past includes violent crimes, notably a nine-year sentence for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Thorpe appeared for sentencing via a video link from Peterborough prison. The court heard that he has a long history of violent and dishonest behavior, which contributed to the severity of his current sentence. Judge Andrew Shaw described Thorpe as a “dangerous career criminal” and imposed an extended sentence of 22 years, comprising 14 years in custody followed by eight years on licence.

In his remarks, Judge Shaw emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating, “You are a dangerous career criminal.” He pointed out that Thorpe had targeted a vulnerable victim who was incapable of consenting at the time of the assault, and he acknowledged the devastating impact the rape has had on her life. The judge also noted that during the trial, Thorpe’s behavior was unpredictable at times, further underscoring his dangerousness.

During the trial, it was established that the victim did not know Thorpe prior to the attack. Despite multiple warnings to leave her alone, Thorpe persisted and ultimately committed the assault. After the attack, she managed to escape and was able to run away from the scene. Thorpe was subsequently arrested nearby and attempted to deny any wrongdoing, claiming that the sex was consensual. However, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him, leading to his lengthy prison sentence.
