MAN CLEARED OF RAPE DESPITE VIOLENCE ADMISSION IN NEWCASTLE COURT
A man named Gareth Rickman, from Trevelyan Drive, Newbiggin Hall, was involved in a legal case where he admitted to a pattern of violent assaults on his partner during their relationship.He told Newcastle Crown Court he was 'probably a monster' for his behavior.
Rickman denied the rape and false imprisonment allegations made by the woman, who was in her 20s.
A jury took only an hour to clear him of both charges after a month-long trial, with the woman present to hear the verdicts.
Despite the acquittal, Rickman faces possible imprisonment as he has admitted four separate assaults and other offences including damaging her door, destroying clothing, false imprisonment, and dangerous driving.
The court judge remanded him in custody for pre-sentence reports and emphasized the need for a full risk assessment.
Rickman acknowledged his violent past, stating, 'I probably am a monster but I'm not a rapist and never have been,' and admitted his behavior had been worse than on the night in question.
He is awaiting sentencing after reports are completed, and the court proceedings highlighted the seriousness of his previous violent actions.
