GARETH PALFREY OF PONTLLANFRAITH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN IN CARDIFF
In September 2019, Gareth Palfrey, a 59-year-old resident of Beech Avenue in Pontllanfraith, was sentenced to a significant prison term after admitting to a series of serious sexual offences committed against minors.The case was heard at Cardiff Crown Court, where Palfrey pleaded guilty to a total of 18 separate charges, including indecent assault and engaging in sexual activities with children.
The court proceedings revealed that Palfrey had been involved in a disturbing pattern of criminal behavior over a period of time, targeting young victims.
Although he faced additional charges—specifically two counts of indecent assault—the prosecution chose not to pursue these allegations further, and the judge directed verdicts of not guilty on those counts.
Despite this, the court acknowledged Palfrey’s admission of guilt on the remaining charges, which played a role in the sentencing decision.
Judge Eleri Rees, the Recorder of Cardiff, presided over the case and ultimately sentenced Palfrey to nine years in prison.
In addition to his incarceration, the court ordered Palfrey to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities following his release.
Furthermore, he was placed under an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which imposes strict restrictions aimed at safeguarding the public from potential future offenses.
Earlier in August 2019, the seriousness of Palfrey’s crimes was underscored during a hearing where the judge emphasized that a lengthy custodial sentence was inevitable.
At that time, Palfrey had already admitted to multiple counts of sexual misconduct, including four counts of indecent assault on a girl under 13, two counts of indecent assault on a boy under 13, six counts of indecent assault, and six counts of sexual activity with a child.
These offences, which occurred some time ago, painted a disturbing picture of his criminal history.
During the proceedings, prosecuting counsel Claire Wilks highlighted the gravity of the offences, while Palfrey’s defense lawyer, Jeff Jones, acknowledged his client’s guilty pleas.
Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, who was involved in the case, warned Palfrey that an immediate and very lengthy prison sentence was the likely outcome.
She also ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared, citing Palfrey’s previously good character as a factor for consideration but emphasizing that the report would not alter the expectation of a substantial custodial sentence.
Throughout the legal process, Palfrey remained remanded in custody, awaiting sentencing scheduled for September 6.
The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crimes and the location—Pontllanfraith—highlighting the importance of justice and safeguarding vulnerable children from such predatory behavior.
