GARETH HUGHES SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL IN REDDISH AND MANCHESTER

In June 2019, Gareth Hughes, a 43-year-old man from Reddish, Stockport, was convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous crimes involving a teenage girl he met online. Hughes, who was a managing director of a company at the time, engaged in a prolonged period of sexual abuse that spanned over four years, beginning when the girl was just 14 years old.

Hughes had initially connected with the girl through the social media platform Snog.fm, a site designed for teenagers to rate each other's photos with options to 'snog, marry or avoid.' During their online interactions, Hughes, who falsely claimed to be 26 when he was actually 36, began grooming the young girl. Their communication quickly escalated, and Hughes lied about his age to maintain their contact. As their relationship developed, Hughes would frequently pick her up from school in his Mazda 6, shower her with gifts, and take her back to his apartment for sexual encounters, which he recorded on video. Police investigations later uncovered hundreds of images stored on his computer, stored in a folder ominously labeled ‘filth’.

At the time of these crimes, Hughes was expecting a child with his girlfriend, adding a disturbing layer to his actions. His criminal activities came to light after the victim, now 21 and studying at university, invited Hughes to dinner at her family home. During this visit, she handed her parents a letter confessing to a sexual relationship with Hughes that had begun before she even started her GCSEs. The letter detailed how Hughes had threatened her with suicide if she refused his advances, and how he would often make her leave her home at night to engage in sexual acts.

Further inquiries revealed that Hughes, a graduate in computer science, had also targeted two other victims. One was a friend of the primary victim, whom he attempted to coerce into a threesome, and the other was a girl he met through the same social media site. The primary victim had previously submitted an English story during her GCSEs, in which she described being raped, although no action was taken at her request. Police uncovered a Skype conversation in which the girl expressed a desire to become pregnant by Hughes, to which he responded that he wished she had done so when she was 14.

In her statement to police, the victim described the profound emotional and psychological damage inflicted by Hughes. She recounted how she was vulnerable and unsure of herself at the time, often late to school, not showering for days, and binge-eating to cope with her trauma. She revealed ongoing struggles with depression, suicidal thoughts, nightmares, and flashbacks, especially during consensual sexual encounters. She expressed that Hughes’s actions had caused lasting harm, stating, “He made the repeated decision that his sexual gratification was more important than my mental health and that of the other victims.”

Hughes’s criminal conduct was addressed at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges. The court heard that the abuse began in 2012 when the girl was only 14. Prosecutor Miss Simone Flynn detailed how, in 2013, the girl confided in her English teacher about her abuse, describing a meeting with a man in town that triggered flashbacks. The teacher alerted the school, and subsequent investigations revealed that Hughes had been purchasing gifts for her using credit cards found by her mother, who was concerned about her daughter’s secretive behavior.

By September 2015, the girl had left home to attend university, but her mental health continued to decline, leading to diagnoses of anxiety and depression. The tragic suicide of a close friend in 2016 prompted her to move back home, and she only returned to university to sit her exams. During this period, she confided in her parents about Hughes, providing a letter in which she revealed the full extent of their sexual relationship, beginning when she was 14, and describing Hughes’s threats and manipulative behavior.

Police investigations uncovered that Hughes had also targeted other girls. One was a second victim met at her friend’s sleepover, and another was contacted via Snog.fm, where Hughes encouraged her to send nude photographs. Authorities seized two computers and an iPhone from Hughes’s workplace in 2016, which contained a total of 260 indecent images, including footage of a five-year-old child. Records of emails and Skype conversations further linked Hughes to the victims.

Following his initial arrest, Hughes went on the run, using aliases, swapping phone numbers, and conducting financial transactions with pre-paid credit cards to evade detection. He was eventually traced and arrested at his current workplace in London in January 2019. During sentencing at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, Hughes was handed a sentence of six years and eight months after pleading guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, eight counts of making indecent images of a child, two counts of distributing indecent images, and one count of possessing extreme pornography.

Judge Paul Lawton emphasized the gravity of Hughes’s offenses, highlighting his manipulative nature and lack of insight. He stated, “It is overwhelmingly clear from the evidence that you have a sexual interest in young teenage girls. You are a highly educated but manipulative man and you have a lack of insight into your offending. The ages and stage of growth of the girls only highlights the need for the law to protect them from themselves – you have caused life-long psychological damage.”
