GARETH BYRD FROM MONMOUTH FACES JAIL AFTER SEX OFFENCE AGAINST CHILD
In July 2018, a serious legal warning was issued to Gareth Byrd, a resident of Monmouth, after he admitted to engaging in a sexual offence involving a minor. The case was heard at Newport Crown Court, where Byrd, aged 31 and residing on Church Street in Monmouth, pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual activity with a child. The incident in question reportedly occurred over a period spanning from 2015 to 2016, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of the young victim involved.During the court proceedings, Byrd’s legal representative, Nigel Fryer, requested that the judge, Jeremy Jenkins, postpone the sentencing to allow for a comprehensive report to be prepared by the Probation Service. This report was intended to provide the court with a detailed understanding of Byrd’s background and circumstances before determining an appropriate sentence.
It was revealed during the hearing that Byrd has learning difficulties and is heavily dependent on his mother for support. As a result, the court scheduled the sentencing for August 31, to enable Byrd’s mother to attend and provide her perspective during the proceedings.
Judge Jenkins addressed Byrd directly, emphasizing the gravity of the case: “You have pleaded guilty to a very serious matter. I want to know more about you, and I am going to adjourn the sentence for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.” The judge also made it clear that the adjournment did not imply any particular outcome, stating, “The fact I am adjourning gives no indication of the sentence you could receive. All options are open, including immediate custody.”
Despite the serious nature of the charges, Byrd was granted bail on the condition that he fully cooperates with the Probation Service, pending the final sentencing. The case highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding child protection and the legal processes involved in addressing such grave offences in Monmouth and the wider community.
