FREDERICK HANMER FROM ASHBURTON SENTENCED FOR ABUSE IN DEVON AFTER EASTENDERS INSPIRED VICTIM
In a case that highlights the profound impact of media on victims of abuse, Frederick Hanmer, a 55-year-old man from Ashburton, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison following his conviction on multiple counts of sexual assault and rape. The conviction was handed down at Exeter Crown Court on Thursday, after a jury found Hanmer guilty of four counts of rape and five counts of sexual assault.Details of the case reveal a disturbing history of abuse involving a girl who is now in her twenties. The court heard that Hanmer first assaulted her when she was just seven years old. The victim, who had previously remained silent for over ten years, was inspired to come forward after watching a storyline on the BBC soap opera EastEnders, which depicted a young girl being sexually abused. This storyline resonated deeply with her, prompting her to speak out about her own experiences.
It was also revealed during the trial that the victim had initially disclosed her abuse as a young child but later retracted her allegations. Despite this, the court found sufficient evidence to convict Hanmer of additional abuse, including assaults that occurred when the girl was a teenager. Hanmer, who resides in Higher Roborough, denied all charges, claiming that the allegations were “wicked lies.”
The victim testified that her decision to speak out had a positive impact on her mental health and overall well-being. She expressed relief and happiness, stating, “It has lifted a lot off me. I’m relieved, which has made me happier.” She also shared that prior to revealing her abuse, she was often angry and prone to lashing out at others without reason.
Following the verdict, Detective Sergeant Neil Ralph of Devon and Cornwall Police commented on the case, emphasizing the importance of perseverance in investigating historical abuse. He said, “The victim saw the episode of EastEnders and it was like what had happened to her. It gave her the impetus to come forward. This does indicate that no matter how long ago offences occurred, we will thoroughly investigate them.”
