PREGNANT WOMAN ATTACKED WITH SWORD AND RAZOR AND MADE TO DRINK VIOLENT NORTH EAST THUG'S BLOOD
A pregnant woman was left in "pain so bad you think you are already dead" during a shocking campaign of gratuitous violence and humiliation by her partner.Freddy Smith, also known as Campbell, attacked the victim with weapons including sword and razor blade, made her go outside naked and made her drink his blood, a court heard.
Many of his attacks took place when she was pregnant with his child, between 2021 and 2022 and the victim said he became "bad Freddy" from around January 2022.
Joe Hedworth, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court: "He subjected her to a catalogue of violence using a variety of weapons, including a razor blade, a metal weightlifting pole and sword, on many occasions when she was pregnant and he took steps to stop his use of violence being discovered." "He would humiliate her.
He made her drink his blood, made her go outside in the cold while naked and write that she would sell naked images of her body for money." The court heard that Smith, 24, of East Lea, Winlaton, Gateshead, assaulted the woman in December 2021 by throwing a mug at her elbow, causing a superficial wound.
He also threw a chair at her but she managed to move out of the way.
He subjected her to controlling behaviour by not allowing her to use her phone or to look in the mirror when at his home.
Around the time of New Year 2022, Smith used a sword to stab her to the lower leg and foot, causing her to bleed heavily.
She was left with scars from the puncture wounds.
In March 2022, he smashed a glass bottle onto her finger, leaving it black and blue.
On another occasion, he wounded her with intent but cutting her left thigh with a razor blade while she was in the shower, leaving her with a deep open wound which left fat visible and left her scarred.
Mr Hedworth said: "During that incident, he threatened to cut her throat and made her go out naked in the cold and dark that evening and made her write in a book 'I will sell pictures of my naked body' over and over.
She was pregnant at the time." In another attack, he used a metal pole to hit her to back of the head, causing it to crack open, leaving a scar.
In July 2022, he accused her of cheating and told her "You've walked into a beating".
Mr Hedworth said he choked her and struck her on the legs with a metal pole, possibly a baseball bat, and punched her around 25 times.
She sustained a black eye and bruises.
She described the pain as 500 out of ten.
In a victim impact statement, the woman, who ended up having a breakdown and spent time in hospital, said: "The abuse began in 2021 when I was four months pregnant and ended in July 2022.
I was living in a constant state of fear." "I said it was pain so bad you think you're already dead.
Death is something I feared on many occasions." "The abuse had come to an end but the impact it's left behind feels endless." "His violence has left me with scars all over my body.
They are a constant reminder of everything that I went through." "It's affected my self-worth and self-esteem.
Despite everything he did I still feel moments of guilt for reporting him to the police but I know I had to do it.
I hope no one has to experience what I went through with him." Smith, who has one previous conviction for assaulting his mother, which post-dates these offences, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, wounding, four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, strangulation and controlling or coercive behaviour.
Jailing him for six years with an extended licence period of a further three years and imposing a restraining order, Judge Tim Gittins told him: "How anyone could think these were appropriate acts within a loving and caring relationship is beyond me.
How anyone could not understand they were causing real pain and emotional distress." "It's not clear how much you were influenced by the undoubted toxic culture on social media that makes out you have to be in control to be a real man.
It's nothing of the kind really.
It simply shows someone being weak and cowardly in their behaviour." Sue Hirst, defending, said Smith has mental health issues, including autism and was young and immature at the time.
