FATHER WHO KNIFED WIFE 120 TIMES WALKS FREE AFTER RECOVERY VERDICT
Farrukh Malik, a 66-year-old man, was involved in a frenzied attack at his north London home where he knifed his partner Sarwat over 120 times.During his trial, he was declared insane and faced charges of murder.
However, he was acquitted of murder due to mental health reasons and was instead set free after a court heard that he had recovered from his depressive psychosis following the death of his mother.
The judge, Gerald Gordon, emphasized that Malik’s release was not a punishment but a measure to prevent relapse, stating, 'He must continue with medical treatment for the next two years.' The court was informed of Malik's mental health history, including a series of health problems such as heart attack and insomnia, which contributed to his mental state prior to the incident.
Despite fears from one psychiatrist that his condition could worsen, two other doctors attested to his low risk and declared he no longer posed a danger.
Malik now lives with his brother in Berkshire and continues to receive medical treatment, with ongoing monitoring advised by the court.
Prosecutors did not challenge Malik’s defense, and he was cleared owing to paranoia and psychosis at the time of the attack.
He and his family had a seemingly good relationship before the tragedy, and the court highlighted that the family will play a key role in supervising his recovery, with the order being purely preventative rather than punitive.
