MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE
Evan Wright, a man labeled as 'obsessively jealous,' has been sentenced to prison for abusing his former intimate partner.Wright, aged 22 and with no fixed address, appeared before Mold Crown Court for sentencing on Thursday, November 27.
He had previously admitted to charges including controlling and coercive behavior, assault resulting in actual bodily harm, and two counts of criminal damage.
Prosecutor Ryan Rothwell explained that these incidents took place between January and July of that year, involving Wright’s then-girlfriend, Rachel Harrison.
The court noted that the relationship was often strained, with Wright exerting controlling influence—isolating Miss Harrison from friends and dictating her dress.
The prosecution described how Wright sent numerous abusive and accusatory messages.
In cases where he didn’t have a phone, he emailed or transferred a penny into her bank account with accompanying messages.
He also threatened self-harm and accused her of causing his feelings.
On June 15, Miss Harrison was at Rosie's nightclub in Chester with Wright and a friend.
During the evening, Wright became aggressive and abusive, requiring bouncers to remove her from the venue.
Later, at the couple's flat in Saltney, Wright shouted insults from the window.
Once inside, after a confrontation, he forcibly pinned her down on the bed and punched her in the torso multiple times.
He seized her phone, which was found damaged by police later.
She sustained injuries including a split lip and bruises.
After his arrest, Wright told police that Miss Harrison was the attacker and that he was acting out of self-defense.
He was released on bail with restrictions to prevent contact with Miss Harrison or access to the flat.
Despite this, he entered the flat later, forcibly barging in after Miss Harrison had answered the door.
He lifted her mattress, causing her to fall, and destroyed her mobile phone by smashing it.
Miss Harrison’s victim statement revealed she was frightened for her life and felt emotionally traumatised, feeling 'low and worthless.' She also has lasting scars on her lip.
Her lawyer, Tom McLoughlin, highlighted Wright’s motivation and said his time in detention was an eye-opener.
He expressed that Wright felt remorse and was ready to work with probation services.
The judge, Rhys Rowlands, identified Wright as 'obsessively jealous,' emphasizing that the gravity of the crimes called for a custodial sentence rather than a community order.
Wright was sentenced to 32 months in prison and was also placed under a 10-year order to protect against domestic abuse.
