EVAN BEVAN'S CRUELTY IN CWMAANN: PONY AND DOG ABUSE SHOCKS LAMPETER COMMUNITY

Evan Bevan, a resident of Cwmann, has been found guilty of multiple acts of animal cruelty that took place at his home in Pyllau Crynion, Cwmann, near Lampeter. The case came to light after anonymous footage was provided to the RSPCA, revealing disturbing scenes of Bevan physically abusing animals under his care.

In the videos, Bevan was seen kicking a pony named Tony with significant force, targeting its left shoulder. The footage also showed him repeatedly striking a mastiff called Lily with a stick, causing her visible distress and trauma. Additionally, Bevan failed to seek veterinary treatment for a German Shepherd named Rosie, who had sustained an injury to her right ear during a fight. Instead of proper medical care, Bevan merely sprayed the injured ear with Engemycin spray, neglecting the dog's pain and suffering.

The incidents all occurred at Bevan’s residence in Cwmann, where authorities later discovered a troubling environment. RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Cooper, who attended the property along with police officers and an animal health officer from Carmarthenshire Council, identified Bevan as the man in the videos. She recounted that upon entering a barn on the property, they found approximately 10 to 15 dogs that immediately began fighting, with one dog being bitten on the face and bleeding. Bevan reportedly expressed that the situation was overwhelming and stated he was no longer interested in breeding animals.

When asked about the whereabouts of Rosie, Bevan claimed he had rehomed her with a rescue centre a few days earlier. The rescue centre later confirmed that Rosie had been brought in by Bevan, and she was found to have an old injury to her right ear. The court was presented with an independent veterinary report analyzing the videos and the condition of the animals involved. The report confirmed that Bevan’s actions caused pain and suffering, noting that he forcefully kicked Tony the pony and repeatedly hit Lily the mastiff with a stick during the incidents.

Specifically, the vet stated that Bevan’s kick to Tony’s shoulder was forceful and made direct contact, resulting in pain. Regarding Rosie, the injury to her ear was significant enough to cause her suffering, and it was sustained during the altercation captured on video, where Bevan was seen swinging a stick at a group of dogs running freely in a yard. During this chaos, he struck another dog and engaged in a fight between the animals. The report detailed how Bevan repeatedly hit Lily with his stick in an attempt to free her from a German Shepherd named Rosie, who was also involved in the scuffle.

Bevan admitted that Rosie’s ear injury occurred during this incident but claimed he did not seek veterinary care, opting instead to spray her ear with Engemycin. Both Rosie and Lily, along with Maggie, a female Labrador, have since been rehomed into loving new homes. Rosie was cared for by another rescue organization and has also been successfully rehomed.

Magistrates, after careful consideration, decided not to impose a ban on Bevan keeping animals. They noted that the offences dated back to 2022 and that the number of animals in his care had significantly decreased, as he was no longer involved in breeding dogs or ponies. The court acknowledged that the risk to future animal welfare had been substantially reduced.

Sentencing for Bevan included a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, along with a 25-day rehabilitation order, 200 hours of unpaid work, and a financial penalty of £1,000 in costs and victim surcharge. Despite the severity of the case, no disqualification from pet ownership was imposed, reflecting the court’s assessment of the current situation and Bevan’s reduced involvement in animal care.
