EUAN MCGRATH'S SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE IN PERTH

Euan McGrath, a resident of Perth, became embroiled in a disturbing case involving the distribution of child pornography during his time as a student at Strathclyde University. The criminal activities he engaged in included exchanging explicit images and videos of minors through various digital platforms, such as file-sharing applications and Skype. These actions, which involved the sharing of selfies and illicit material depicting children, were uncovered during a police investigation that revealed McGrath was only 16 years old at the time.

According to court records, McGrath was found in possession of a disturbing collection of illicit content, including 73 still images and 7 videos featuring young boys as young as six years old. The investigation exposed his involvement in the online exchange of these materials, raising serious concerns about his conduct and the potential risks posed by such interactions.

Despite the gravity of his offenses, McGrath was brought before the court in July 2017, where he received a relatively lenient sentence. He was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service, a decision that drew criticism from some quarters. Recently, staff from the Criminal Justice Services attempted to petition the Perth Sheriff Court to have his sentence reduced, citing logistical issues such as the inconvenience of traveling for regular meetings. However, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis firmly rejected this request, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the severity of the punishment.

Sheriff Foulis stated, 'It may well cause him an element of ‘inconvenience’ but it was a very serious matter and I am not prepared to grant this.' He further explained that reducing the sentence would send the wrong message to the public about the seriousness of such crimes. 'There is a perception element to this,' he added, underscoring the importance of upholding the integrity of the justice process.

During the sentencing, Sheriff Foulis highlighted the dangers associated with online interactions, noting that McGrath might have believed he was communicating with peers of his own age. However, the sheriff pointed out the inherent risks, stating, 'He may think he was involved with like-minded teenagers but he may not have been involved with like-minded teenagers.' The sheriff also emphasized that McGrath was 'sending images to people he thinks are his age equivalent, but he actually doesn’t know that,' illustrating the potential for exploitation and harm in such online exchanges.
