DERSINGHAM PAIR BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS AFTER RSPCA CASE

Two people have been banned from keeping animals after failing to treat their German Shepherd's chronic skin disease which caused extensive fur loss, soreness and irritation.

RSPCA inspectors were called to a home in Hipkin Road, Dersingham, after receiving concerns for the welfare of a female dog named Marmaduke.

In a statement presented to the court, RSPCA Inspector Ben Kirby said: “Marmaduke had significant hair loss across her back and hindquarters, her skin appeared sore and inflamed and there was a strong smell of yeast.

“It was clear she had been suffering for some time without the veterinary care she desperately needed.” Marmaduke was seized by police under the Animal Welfare Act and placed in RSPCA care, where she began receiving treatment for her condition.

A vet found she had been suffering for at least two months from the disease, which was most likely caused by parasites or allergies.

Emma Elizabeth Ruby Townsend, 37, and Jason Lee Drewery, 39, both of Hipkin Road, Dersingham, were convicted in their absence at King’s Lynn Magistrates' Court on November 4.

They both pleaded not guilty to causing unnecessary suffering and failing to meet the needs of Marmaduke, contrary to sections 4 and 9 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, between March 2 and 4, 2023.

They were both banned from keeping animals for five years.

Townsend was handed a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154.

Drewery was given a 12-month Community Order - with 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days, six months of alcohol treatment requirement and 200 hours of unpaid work - as well as a £114 victim surcharge.

In mitigation, the court heard that Townsend suffered with her mental health, while Drewery had been battling drug and alcohol issues.

Following the sentencing, RSPCA Chief Inspector Kathryn Parfitt said: “Poor Marmaduke would have been in terrible pain and it is heartbreaking to know that she suffered so needlessly.

“Owning an animal is a serious and lifelong responsibility - when problems arise, it’s vital to get professional advice straight away rather than allow an animal to deteriorate.”
