ELLIS HENDERSON SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS OVER SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES IN DURHAM

The court in Durham has handed down a stern prison sentence to Ellis Henderson, a young man convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving two young girls.

Henderson, now 20 years old and residing on Paxton Close, Newton Aycliffe, was sentenced on Monday, February 6, after being found guilty last month of committing two counts of rape of a girl under the age of 13, one count of sexual assault of a girl under 13, and two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.

The trial, which spanned the Christmas and New Year period, revealed disturbing details about Henderson’s predatory behaviour.

Although Henderson denied all charges, the jury convicted him following a comprehensive trial held at Durham Crown Court.

The case uncovered how Henderson, characterized by the prosecution as an “immature” and “naïve” individual, manipulated two vulnerable teenage girls for his own gratification.

The sentencing hearing was adjourned to allow the Probation Service to prepare a detailed background report on Henderson, who remains in denial about the gravity of his actions.

Evidence presented in court described how Henderson initially made contact with his victims by parking his vehicle in locations where children, including the two girls, often gathered.

Through conversations, he gradually gained their trust, eventually persuading them to enter his car.

Once inside, he drove them to secluded areas where he forced them to engage in sexual acts.

Prosecutor Shaun Dodds provided insight into the impact on the victims during the hearing.

One of the girls chose not to give a victim statement publicly but had previously told police that she felt overwhelmed by the events, prompting her to seek counselling sessions.

She expressed feelings of guilt, believing that her meeting Henderson was partly her fault, and she expressed her hatred for him.

The other girl described feeling “in a dark place,” wishing she had never made contact with Henderson, and recounted how she was falsely accused of lying after reporting the crimes.

She also revealed that she has since self-harmed and distanced herself from friends, indicating the profound psychological toll her ordeal has taken.

She described Henderson as a manipulative figure who shattered her trust in others.

In his defense, Chris Baker, representing Henderson, explained that at the time of the offences, Henderson was just shy of his 18th birthday.

The pre-sentence report described him as “an immature, naïve and vulnerable young man,” despite the fact that he has since turned 20.

Baker emphasized that Henderson has no previous convictions and highlighted his vulnerable state, mentioning that Henderson was assaulted twice while in custody on remand.

However, he stressed that Henderson remains in denial about the offences.

Addressing Henderson directly, Judge James Adkin underscored the seriousness of the crimes.

He stated, “You must now be sentenced for a number of serious sexual offences of which the jury found you guilty.” The judge noted evidence of planning, as Henderson took the victims to isolated locations and engaged in grooming behaviours.

Given this, Judge Adkin imposed an eight-year prison term, instructing Henderson that he would be required to serve at least two-thirds of the sentence before being eligible for release on licence.

The judge also remarked that if Henderson had been older at the time, the sentence could have been as long as 13 years.

Furthermore, Henderson will be subject to additional legal restrictions.

He will be placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order that will prevent him from contacting either victim for a period of 12 years.

Additionally, he will face lifelong registration as a sex offender.

Reacting to the outcome, Jonathan Hanratty from the Crown Prosecution Service’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit expressed that Henderson's actions were manipulative and calculated, targeting girls under the age of consent in Durham.

He praised the bravery of the victims for providing credible accounts that contributed to Henderson’s conviction.

Hanratty concluded by hoping that the sentence offers some sense of justice and reassurance to the victims, emphasizing the CPS’s commitment to holding predators accountable.
