ELIOTT DIFFLEY AND ISLINGTON: CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENDER SENTENCED IN LONDON
In July 2014, an incident at Islington Police Station garnered attention when a USB data stick filled with child abuse images was forcibly ejected from the body of a suspect. Eliott Diffley, 24 years old, appeared at Blackfriars Crown Court and pleaded guilty to 17 counts of possessing indecent images of children along with one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image. He faces a maximum sentence of 12 months imprisonment.The investigation began on October 26 of the previous year when Pc Crossnan was patrolling on Parkhurst Road, Holloway. Noticing the smell of cannabis, he observed Diffley smoking and saw him discard an object upon noticing the police. After a search, officers found two mobile phones—one of which was reported as lost or stolen—and subsequently arrested him for handling stolen goods.
During a subsequent search at Islington Police Station, a USB data stick fell from Diffley's bottom, prompting his further arrest on theft charges. Diffley claimed he had stolen the USB from an internet cafe. However, officers examined the data stick and uncovered indecent images of children. A search of Diffley's residence revealed a significant collection of similar images.
Further investigation determined that the data stick was not stolen, and browsing his internet search history revealed active attempts to find images of children. Diffley was formally charged on June 12.
Pc Crossnan commented on the case, stating, “This case has been dealt with the upmost professionalism by all of the officers involved. People have preconceptions of the type of person who commits this type of crime and Mr Diffley challenges that idea. The public should be reassured that investigation into any form of child abuse is taken very seriously and we will work tirelessly to bring offenders like Diffley to justice.”
Diffley, whose address is listed as Leighton Road, Kentish Town, will also be required to sign the sex offenders register following his conviction.
