MOTHER JAILED FOR ALLOWING DISABLED DAUGHTER TO DIE IN SQUALOR
Elaine Clarke, a mother and paid carer, was convicted of allowing her disabled daughter Debbie Leitch, who had Down's Syndrome, to die from neglect in her filthy bedroom.Debbie, aged 24, was found dead on August 29, 2019, weighing only 3 stones 10 pounds, covered in scabies, with maggots present, and in an extremely distressing state.
The court heard that Clarke had ignored social workers' warnings, lied to doctors, and failed to seek urgent help for her daughter.
Despite concerns over her daughter's welfare—some of which had been raised when Debbie was admitted to hospital with Norwegian scabies in 2018—Clarke did not take action.
Instead, when family members visited and found Debbie in poor condition, she denied any neglect and claimed Debbie was well cared for.
On the day Debbie died, Clarke called emergency services, claiming her daughter had been unwell for days.
When paramedics arrived, they were met with a gruesome scene: Debbie was lying among rotting food, faeces, and maggots in her room, with skin encrusted with scabs and her clothing soiled.
Clarke provided conflicting accounts about her care, and Judge Mrs.
Justice Yip condemned her for gross negligence manslaughter, stating: "You left her to die in her squalid room." Clarke was sentenced to nine years and seven months in prison for her role in Debbie's death, which was characterized by failure to care and abandonment in her final days, causing significant distress to Debbie's family and emergency workers who attended the scene.
