EDWIN CRAIG FROM CRANWELL SENTENCED FOR NEARLY 100,000 CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

A disturbing case has come to light involving Edwin Craig, a 53-year-old man residing on North Road in Cranwell, who was found to possess an alarming number of indecent images of children. Craig, who dedicated over twenty years of his life working at RAF Cranwell, was subjected to a police investigation that uncovered shocking evidence of his involvement in the possession and creation of such illicit material.

In October 2018, authorities executed a search warrant at Craig’s residence, leading to the discovery of a staggering total of 99,706 indecent images of children stored across three electronic devices. The police investigation revealed that Craig had employed advanced computer software designed to automatically download and collect these images, a process that made it impossible for him to view all of the material himself. This sophisticated method of acquiring the images indicated a deliberate effort to amass a large collection of illegal content.

During the subsequent court proceedings, prosecutor Phil Howes detailed the timeline and nature of the evidence. He stated, “These matters came to light in October 2018 when the police executed a search warrant at the defendant’s home address.” The prosecutor further explained that while most of the images were classified as the lowest category of indecency, a disturbing 55 images fell into the most serious classification, highlighting the severity of the material involved.

Edwin Craig faced multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images of children, covering the period from July 15, 2016, to October 14, 2018. Additionally, he was charged with possession of 14 prohibited images of a child. During police interviews, Craig largely responded with “no comment,” refusing to cooperate initially. However, he later admitted to having an interest in young girls, which added to the gravity of his offenses.

Craig’s legal representative, Terry Boston, argued that his client recognized the gravity of his actions and had taken steps toward rehabilitation. Boston emphasized that Craig had completed various programs aimed at addressing his behavior and expressed concern over his troubled experiences in prison, which he described as frightening and distressing.

Judge Steven Coupland addressed the court, acknowledging Craig’s prior imprisonment while awaiting sentencing. The judge remarked, “He has already experienced prison while awaiting his sentence. That has been a difficult period for him, which is beneficial. This should serve as a reminder of the consequences of viewing such images and the potential reoffending if he reverts to such behavior.”

Ultimately, Craig was sentenced to a three-year community order, which includes a 30-day requirement for rehabilitation. He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years and issued a five-year sexual harm prevention order. The judge concluded by highlighting the personal toll of the case, stating, “He is a destroyed man at the moment. He worked at RAF Cranwell for 20 years but has now lost his position. He is very worried about losing his home. While in custody, he has endured a horrific experience and is utterly devastated.”
