RENOWNED HEART SURGEON PUT ON SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER OVER INDECENT ASSAULTS
A distinguished cardiac surgeon based in London has been convicted of indecent assault and subsequently received a sentence following an investigation conducted by the Metropolitan Police.Dr.
Mohamed Amrani, aged 54 and residing on Georgian Way in Harrow, was found guilty on April 27th of two counts of indecent assault along with one count of sexual assault at the Old Bailey court.
He appeared before the court the next day and received a sentence of six months in prison, which was suspended for 12 months.
Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for seven years and complete a 25-day rehabilitation order.
He was also ordered to pay costs totaling £8,000 (more than €9,000).
Detective Inspector Neil John, part of the Metropolitan Police’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command (SOECA), stated that Amrani exploited his professional status to carry out his assaults, believing he could act without consequence.
He highlighted that the victim’s fear of disbelief or lack of support was compounded by Amrani’s senior position.
Court evidence revealed instances of intimidation, bullying, and threats directed at staff who considered reporting him, with some fearing career progression would be hindered.
Detective John praised the victims’ bravery in coming forward, describing them as courageous for sharing their experiences.
He condemned Amrani’s actions, noting the disparity between his medical skills and his apparent disregard for his victims.
The officer encouraged others who have experienced sexual violence or abuse to contact authorities, assuring they will be listened to and that justice will be pursued regardless of the offender’s status or position.
The police launched their inquiry into Amrani’s conduct in April 2015.
He was initially arrested on suspicion of rape in May 2015, denying the allegations.
As the investigation continued, additional victims came forward, accusing him of indecent assaults during his work at Harefield Hospital and the Cromwell private hospital in Kensington, west London.
One report detailed an incident where Amrani indecently assaulted a colleague while a patient was in surgery, then warned her to proceed with caution, implying he might be a member of an upcoming interview panel she was attending.
In June 2016, Amrani was formally charged with multiple offences including rape, sexual assaults, and indecent assaults.
He was acquitted of one count of rape, four counts of indecent assault, two counts of assault by penetration, and one sexual assault, but the court found him guilty of other charges.
